NC State head coach Dave Doeren met with the media one last time today before the Wolfpack face off against Western Carolina this Saturday at 12:30pm. The video is ABOVE, and a bulleted breakdown is BELOW.

Mistakes From Week 1…

  • Could have blocked a punt. Guy in wrong gap.
  • Eyes in the wrong places.
  • Young backs improving on protection.
  • McKay missing an easy one on 3rd
  • We had a lot of things to be hard on them with after that win, and we were. We were demanding.

Theme for the week…

  • Our theme of the week is ‘compete.’
  • Competing to be a better version of us than we were a week ago.

4-game Redshirt rule…

  • Last year, I really liked it.
    • We played any of the redshirt guys that were healthy four games.
    • It’s helped their confidence. It’s not their first time playing in a football game.
  • We’ll do the same thing this year.
    • We’re going to play all of them four games if we can.
    • Some of them, if they’ve proven it, will play in all the games if they’re healthy.
    • That happened last year with Teshaun Smith.

Freshmen DT’s Joshua Harris & CJ Clark…

  • Not ready yet. They’re getting there.
  • Were hoping to have Josh in Week 2.
  • They’re running, lifting, all those types of things. Just got to get them back into football.
  • Getting them back will help depth.
  • Whether we go back to 4-down or not will depend on how they can play.
  • Just because we have them doesn’t mean we’ll use them. They have to prove that they deserve to be out there.

Wide Receivers Opportunity with Riley gone…

  • Excited for the opportunity.
  • Redshirt Sophomore Max Fisher had a really good week.
  • Redshirt Freshman Devin Carter has been very consistent whole time
    • Expect him to be ready to take on that role.
  • Redshirt Freshman Jasiah Provillon is the 1 that really needs to take the next step.
    • Dropping that pass. He’s ready to make up for that.

Tabari Hines…

  • Love his football knowledge.
  • He can play any position.
  • He knows the entire offense, which is really impressive for a guy that came in as late as he did.
  • Very competitive guy.
  • Lot of energy on game day.
  • Utility player that can fit a lot of different gaps for us on offense.

Similarities between Tanner Ingle and Joshua Jones…

  • Playing styles, yes.
  • Both very quick contact players and can make up for other people’s mistakes pretty quickly.
  • Gives you an eraser back there
  • Able to get some things on the ground that might be bigger plays if somebody else was in the game.
  • Tanner got thrown into the fire last year and gave up some plays. Had to learn from it and deal with failure, and I think it helps. I know it motivated him.
  • Changed his body in a good way. He’s really leaned up, and it’s helped his speed.
