NC State’s Hidlay Brothers Advance to the Semi-Finals of Cliff Keen Invitational

NC State’s 6th ranked Wrestling team is participating in the Cliff Keen Invitational this weekend, and the Hidlay brothers both advanced to the semifinals last night.

#1 Redshirt Junior Hayden Hidlay (157) pinned Jerry Rubio of Utah Valley in 49 seconds, and then beat Keaton Geerts of Northern Iowa 15-0 in the 2nd period due to tech fall. He then beat Peyton Robb of Nebraska 3-2 in the Quarterfinals. He will face #8 Kendall Coleman of Purdue in the Semifinals.

#4 Redshirt Freshman Trent Hidlay (184) beat Trent Tracy of Cal Poly 12-4, and then beat Tate Samuelson of Wyoming  4-1. Hidlay beat another ranked opponent in the Quarterfinals, beating #19 Owen Webster 7-4 to advance. He will face #3 Taylor Lujan of Northern Iowa in the Semifinals.

Three other Wolfpack wrestlers will have a chance to finish on the podium as well.

#12 Redshirt Junior Tariq Wilson (141) beat Nate Hagan of Edinboro 9-3 in the opening round, and Vinny Vespa of of Hofstra 11-1 in the 2nd round. Unfortunately, Wilson was pinned by #6 Chad Red of Nebraska in the 1st. Wilson will face Anthony Sparacio of Binghamton.

#13 Redshirt Freshman Jarrett Trombley (133) beat Minnesota’s Brent Jones 5-0 in the first round, and pinned Jack Skudlarczyk of Northern Iowa in the second. He unfortunately was taken down with one second left to Ohio State’s Dylan Koontz, losing 5-4. He will face Mosha Schwartz of Northern Colorado.

#13 Redshirt Junior Thomas Bullard (165) had two shutouts in the first two rounds, destroying Jordan Robison of Northern Colorado 16-0 in the 1st, and beating Austin Yant of Northern Iowa 8-0. He went on to lose a close one to #12 Ethan Smith of Ohio State, 4-3 in the Quarterfinals. He will face Dazjon Casto of The Citadel next.

 

Here’s a look at how the other 5 NC State wrestlers who have been eliminated.

#15 Redshirt Freshman Jakob Camacho (125) fell to Jack Medley of Michigan 6-5 in the 2nd round. He then beat Dominic LaJoie of Cornell 12-3 in the Consolation rounds, before falling to #16 Jacob Schwarm of Northern Iowa.

Redshirt Sophomore A.J. Leitten (149) lost to #8 Brock Zacherl of Clarion in the 2nd round, and then beat Cornell’s Hunter Richard 8-6 in Consolation, before falling to Minnesota’s Joshua Maruca 8-4.

#13 Redshirt Junior Daniel Bullard (174) was pinned by Andrew McNally of Kent State, despite holding a dominant lead prior to the pin. He then went on to beat Joe Accousti of Sacred Heart 5-0, before losing to Minnesota’s #9 Devin Skatzka 8-2.

Sophomore Tyrie Houghton lost to Edinboro’s Dylan Reynolds 6-3 in the first round, and advanced by Medical Forfeit over Ryan Reyes of Fresno State in the 2nd Consolation round, before losing Jacob Seely of Northern Colorado 6-4.

Sophomore Heavyweight Deonte Wilson was pinned by Kent State’s Spencer Berthold in the first round, and then beat Tyler Bagoly of Clarion in the 2nd round of Consolation, before falling to #19 Brandon Metz of North Dakota State.
