- We aren’t adding anymore to the class today, but we have until the next signing day to add.
- We’re still hunting. We’ll see where it ends up.
- Really we have until August to add guys. That’s how it happened with Joe Scelfo a few years back.
- There’s some things that can still happen late. Jeffrey Gunter and Levi Jones were late.
- We have 5 left that we can sign.
- I’m very excited for Defensive End Jeffrey Gunter and Linebacker Levi Jones to play next year.
- They’re very athletic guys. They’re hungry.
- It’s hard to practice everyday and never get to play when you’re a guy that’s used to playing.
- They are both guys that can have a huge impact on our football team. They’re excited. I look forward to seeing them when they get back from their break.
- I told them the story about Jacoby Brissett.
- He was the guy that exemplified what it’s like to transfer and have to sit out.
- He made the scout team game day every day.
- These guys did the same thing. They worked really hard.
- If we add players, the line of scrimmage is where we’ll be looking. On the O-line and the D-line, I think those are 2 spots where we’ll be continuing to look probably more than any.
- I don’t think you can ever have enough really good big guys on your football team.
- My focus is on the ones we got, and not the ones we didn’t. That’s a part of recruiting.
- Obviously, I have players on my team that we flipped. That’s just a part of it.
- Coaches stop until we can’t. Once they sign, we can’t recruit them.
- When a kid commits, we’re going to reach out to them and say ‘we’re going to continue to recruit you’ unless he says ‘I don’t want you to.’ That’s just the nature of the business right now.
- Until they make it different, where a kid can sign whenever he wants, kids are going to be recruited.
- How do we handle that? We tell them ‘don’t commit if you want to keep looking.’
- I say those words to our guys.
- By committing we stop recruiting other players at that position when it fills up.
- Most of the kids hear me loud and clear. Some of them don’t. That’s the system we have right now.

Dave Doeren Breaks Down NC State’s 2020 Early Signee’s: BULLETED
Head Coach Dave Doeren met with the media yesterday to breakdown the 17 players that NC State signed yesterday to their 2020 recruiting class. You can watch it here, or check out a bulleted breakdown below.
- It’s 17 young men that represent 7 states and multiple position groups.
- 7 on defense
- 9 on offense
- 1 specialist.
- North Carolina is where we got most of our kids, with 6 guys.
- 8 of them are early enrollees.
- Unlike last year where about 90 percent of class were early enrollees.
- 2 of them are All-State.
- 2 of them are state champions.
- Devon Betty’s team is actually playing in the national championship in Las Vegas this Saturday against St. Louis High School from Hawaii.
- 4 Shrine Bowl invitees that are down there right now: Devan Boykin, Davin Vann, Jalen Coit and Ezemdi Udoh.
- Porter Rooks was in the World Bowl.
- 2 with brothers in the NFL (Ben Finley & Ezemdi Udoh)
- Biggest part…more team speed.
- On offense, particularly the receiving corps, getting some more guys that can run, separate and make some explosive plays.
- We were looking for tough guys, competitive guys, loyal guys that love to train.
- One thing in our program, is that we have to develop players.
- Obviously, we are going to compete for every good player that we can that has the grades and the character, but we want young men that want to train so they look a lot different after a couple years with coach Thunder and his staff.
- That work ethic, that desire and that love.
- 3 really good, tough, smart offensive linemen.
- Really high-character guys.
- 2 linebackers that can run and hit.
- Tight End (Ezemdi Udoh) that’s got great bloodlines, but also is incredibly sized.
- Going to be a guy that we can build up in our program.
- Punter, kicker and a kickoff guy that can help us behind the specialists we have to compete with those guys.
- QB Ben Finley is his own guy. He’s got to blaze his own trail. He chose to come to NC State for his reasons.
- While I was recruiting him, we knew that if we played really well Eliah Drinkwitz could beep,e a head coach, and I told him ‘You can’t come here because of Eliah. You can’t come here because of Ryan. This needs to be your school.’
- He committed that way.
- Know a lot about not just him, but his family, pedigree, and mentality.
- DT Davin Vann is such a humble and quiet young man.
- Ultra-competitive.
- Really flexible guy. Can play multiple positions…see him even running down on kickoffs.
- All-State player.
- I’ve heard he’s doing really well at the Shrine Bowl practices this week. I
- It’s a lot like when we had Nyheim Hines in Garner. Sometimes you have an elite player in your area that’s right down the street and he grew up watching your team play and he wants to be in that uniform.
- WR Porter Rooks was a national recruit.
- People didn’t stop recruiting him, and he stayed loyal to us. That means a lot.
- 1 of the guys at the forefront. 1 of the earliest commits that we had.
- He’s consistent. Good route runner. Good ball catcher. Good speed. Competitive. Understands the game and he’s a really hungry kid that wants to prove himself and help elevate the program.
- Incredible family
- I will tell you that 1 of the guys that is probably the staple of what we’re looking for in the backend is Devan Boykin.
- He’s a very smart football player.
- He plays corner, safety and nickel. He can do a lot of things.
- He was a great receiver.
- He was a great basketball player.
- That’s what you’re looking for when you’re looking for a DB.
- I don’t ever want to be in a situation again as a coach where I can’t make field goals.
- I don’t know if you guys saw in the Georgia Tech game where Chris Dunn pulled a muscle kicking in that game and could barely swing his leg.
- I went to a Weddington game this year, and Ian Williams is a guy can kick.
- He can kick, he can punt, he can kickoff. He’s very talented.
- Bringing him in, one to compete with who we have because that keeps them on edge, but if he doesn’t win the job and he redshirts, to know that we have someone for 4 games in case something were to happen to Trenton Gill or Chris Dunn, so that we can perform on special teams the way that we did this year with our specialists.
- Then have that carry on after they leave, so I’m not replacing a senior with a true freshman down the road.
- After what I just went through, I don’t think I can answer whether most of this class will redshirt in an accurate way.
- I’m still trying to overcome 15 starters out for the year, or whatever it was.
- I tell all these kids the same thing. Come in here and try to win a job.
- If they’re not ready or the competition in front of them is better, then they can redshirt. But, their mentality needs to be that they’re coming in to play.
