PackPros: Joe Thuney 2020 Outlook

Published

on

Former NC State All-American Joe Thuney established himself as one of the best Offensive Guards in the NFL in 2019. ProFootballFocus gave him an overall grade of 79.2 last year, which was the 5th highest grade by an Offensive Guard (13th in 2018). His Pass Block Grade of 87.2 ranked 3rd. Thuney earned 2nd Team All-Pro honors from the APP and PFF.

All of that adds up to why New England decided to use their Franchise Tag on Thuney in March, which is a 1-year contract of $14.8 million in guaranteed money. It remains to be seen if the Pats will sign him to a long-term contract, not making much progress in that department this summer.

Thuney has started every single game the past 4 seasons for the Patriots after they drafted him in the 3rd round in 2016. Every single year, he has improved his PFF Overall Grade:

2016: 65.6
2017: 74.4
2018: 77.4
2019: 79.2

Joe has always been a brilliant kind of guy, and to add to that brilliance, he just added an MBA to his resume from Indiana University Bloomington’s Kelley School of Business in August that he began in 2017, after earning an undergraduate degree in accounting with a minor in Spanish at NC State.
