2021 4-star commit Terquavion Smith is NC State’s next elite-level scorer

Terquavion Smith is a 6’3 shooting guard from Farmville, NC and he’s going to be one of the most exciting scorers on the NC State roster next season.

Like all freshmen, it will take some time to acclimate to the next level, but Smith has a rare combination of elite confidence, ACC-ready size, an obsession with winning, and a jumper with almost unlimited range. He’s been steadily climbing the rankings since his freshman year and some believe he is now the best player in North Carolina (in the  2022 class).

So. how did Keatts reel in Smith with Duke and UNC right down the road?

Well, if you’re paying attention, Keatts hasn’t been scouring the rankings looking for guys to jump in on. He’s been scouting kids and finding talented kids before anyone else is even paying attention. Look a both Jalen Lequae and Josh Hall. Two kids who weren’t that highly sought after when Keatts found them. Before they left highschool they were 5-star prospects who both skipped college altogether to play pro.

Smith is another one of these guys, although based on his age, he isn’t eligible to skip college. He’ll be at NC State next season and it’s all thanks to Keatts being the first to notice him and first to get serious about his recruitment.

Smith said this to the Fayetteville Observer in November…

“They showed me a lot of love and loyalty at the beginning of my high school career…They recruited me hard from the start. When nobody else was recruiting me, they were recruiting me already.”

Now, Smith is a proven winner, a proven scorer and recently was nominated for the McDonald’s All-American game (although left off of the roster). He has led his Farmville Central squad to a 61-2 record over the past 2 seasons, including 2 state titles. This year he’s back at it as Farmville has jumped out to a 12-0 record and is eyeing their third straight championship.

His coach credits his competitive nature to the constant winning.

“He loves to compete, whether it’s live drills — going live, he always wants to go live and compete against somebody. He wants the score taken. He wants to win.”  he told the Fayetteville observer.

So what’s what makes Terquavion Smith so spectacular as a player? Well, he’s got a pretty well-rounded game, but where he stands out is his scoring. The kid can pour it in from all 3  levels.

Smith not only may. be just the best shooter in the state, but some believe he projects to be the best shooter in his class. He’s got unlimited range, pulling up at times from 8 feet beyond the 3pt line and burying it with consistency. But don’t pigeonhole him. Press up on him and he has no problem going by you, and once he’s by you, watch out, the kid can rise up and finish with his high-end athleticism.

At 6’3 he’s got an ACC-ready length for a 2 guard, he’s got the tools to be a go-to scorer and he’s an uber-competitor. That’s why. we think Terquavion Smith is going to be a big problem for the ACC and a huge piece of the NC State youth movement.

Smith will need to put on weight, if he wants to reach his full potential, and he’ll also need to tighten up his handle learn what good shot selection looks like at the next level. But make no mistake, Keatts has himself a future scoring star in Terquavion Smith.
