NC State Women’s Swimming has Greatest Weekend Ever

The Women’s Swim program has been building for this moment. After a strong regular season and second place finish in the ACC Championships, State went to Greensboro for Nationals.

They didn’t disappoint.

National runner-up, FIVE national champions, TWELVE All-American teams/individuals and NC State, ACC and NCAA records broken. An unreal weekend to cap off a crazy season. Highest final rankings, first national champion (then they did it four more times) and all with a fairly young squad.

State’s 400 medley relay, not only was the fastest in NCAA history (3:24.59) but the fastest in the United States. Berkoff, Hansson, Alons and Poole were practically alone in the pool. The same team won the 200 medley, as well.

Sophie Hansson was crowned the champion of both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke. The win made her just the second swimmer in NC State men’s or women’s history to win two individual national titles in one season. The only other member of that club, Dick Fadgen, who won the 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly in 1956.

Katharine Berkoff won the 100 backstroke in a ACC record time of 49.74.
