NC State legend Chris Corchiani thinks UNC is going to go with Hubert Davis as next head coach

Former NC State point guard and ACC legend, Chris Corchiani went onto Twitter and said rather bluntly…

Now, is Corch just shooting off some rumors to get Carolina fans all riled up? Does he know something the rest of us don’t? Or does he just have a real good hunch?

Well, we reached out for a little clarification.

According to Corchiani, it’s just a ‘gut feeling’, and doesn’t believe Davis was hired 9 years ago without some assurances in place.

Now, a Corchiani hunch isn’t just your everyday hunch. This is a guy who is still extremely connected at NC State, a guy who is doing play-by-play for ACC games on ESPN+. He’s connected, he may not know FOR SURE who UNC is going to hire, but you have to believe he’s got his finger on the pulse.

For the record, we agree. While the world is waiting for the Heels to announce Wes Miller or Brad Stevens, we believe it’s going to be assistant coach Hubert Davis. Davis didn’t have to stay at UNC this long as an assistant, in fact, he surely could have gone elsewhere. He’s stayed because of this very moment.

Wes Miller is still just 37 years old. He’s got years to grow and get more experience. UNC will see how it goes with Davis and if it doesn’t work out they’ll still be able to grab Miller in his prime.

But don’t get mixed up. Just because we think Davis is going to be the guy, doesn’t mean we think it’s going to work out. This is a guy who went from player to ESPN analyst, to assistant coach. His only head coaching experience is UNC’s JV team.

Now we could be wrong, but in our opinion, this has Matt Doherty written all over it.

Don’t know if he can coach, but his resume – and uncle Walter – make hiring Davis a great UNC story.
