WATCH: New Wolfpack guard Casey Morsell’s 19 point game vs. Arizona State

When Casey Morsell came to Virginia, Tony Bennett was ready to make this kid a fixture for the Cavs from the start.

How do we know that?

Morsell was a starter right out of the game, getting over 30 minutes per game. However, he never found his consistent shooting touch with UVA. This is a kid who was noted as a good shooter and a great scorer coming out of high school.

Looking through tape and reading through the Virginia message boards, it seems as if Morsell never really got comfortable with the system at UVA. Although he was one of their better defenders, he eventually became a reserve, logging just around 15 minutes per game.

To understand how this happens, you have to examine the UVA offense. They are a team like likes to play inside out. They like to get post touches on almost every possession. And when the post isn’t scoring it, it’s their guards who penetrate and kick to the perimeter. That’s where they house their jump shooters.

So where does a guy Morsell fit in there? You can argue that any great player will create their own niche, but UVA likes to pack the middle with size, and a guy like Morsell needs space to be effective.

It seems as if he never was comfortable as a catch and shoot jump shooter, and when he tried to play his game, he found a clogged middle on his drives.

Obviously for him to be successful, he’ll need to hit shots, but if you’ve played basketball you know that when you’re comfortable and in a system that fits you, you aren’t overthinking your shot, you suddenly start hitting it.

Morsell has very good form, he has a history as a very good shooter and he’s about to be in a system that will play well with his skill set.
