The History of the NC State vs. Clemson Series

There are only two teams that NC State has played in football more than Clemson, and that would be Wake Forest and North Carolina.

Wake Forest 115
UNC 111
Clemson 89

The series dates all the way back to October 14th, 1899, when Clemson beat NC State 24-0.

The Wolfpack have always struggled against the Tigers. It’s not a recent phenomenon. NC State is 29-59-1 against Clemson.

This Saturday’s game will be held at Clemson, which has been deathly for the Wolfpack, holding an 11-27 in Tiger Territory.

NC State’s greatest stretch of success against Clemson was from 1966-76, winning 7 of 9, and even winning 6 straight from 1971-76.

The last time the Wolfpack beat the Tigers down in Death Valley was in 2002, when the 12th ranked NC State beat unranked Clemson 38-6, improving to 9-0.

As far as I can tell, Saturday’s matchup will be only the 5th time the two teams have played one another

2018 – #16 NC State 7 @ #3 Clemson 41 (L)
2017 – #20 NC State 31 #6 Clemson 38 (L)
1992 – #23 NC State 20 #18 Clemson 6 (W)
1991 – #12 NC State 19 @ #19 Clemson 29 (L)
1986 – #20 NC State 27 #16 Clemson 3 (W)

So, the last time NC State beat Clemson, when they were both ranked, was in 1992, which was 30 years ago.
