Jack Chambers Knows How to Throw the Football

With 4:59 left on the clock in the 3rd Quarter last Saturday, NC State Quarterback Devin Leary left the game with a shoulder injury.

Backup Jack Chambers entered the game, and ultimately led the Wolfpack on 3 consecutive scoring drives (3 field goals), giving NC State the lead they needed to pull off a 19-17 victory over FSU.

The interesting thing about those 3 drives, is that Chambers only attempted one pass, which was an incompletion. In fact, after Chambers entered the game, Wide Receiver Thayer Thomas threw the same amount of passes, completing a pass to Chambers on a trick play for a 5 yard loss.

Trailing by 7 points with a little less than 20 minutes to play in the game, the Wolfpack were content to run it 22 times, and pass it only 1 time with Chambers the remainder of the game.

Now, I know that sounds crazy, but it worked.

But I think we all know that’s not a sustainable ratio to win a football game.

I can’t imagine a scenario where #15 NC State goes into the Carrier Dome up at #18 Syracuse, and wins the game passing it only a handful of times.

(Disclaimer: this article is being written under the assumption that Leary doesn’t play this weekend, though that is a possibility.)

But here’s your reminder…Jack Chambers knows how to throw a football.

In fact, Chambers threw the football 914 times as a Quarterback at Charleston Southern, where he played for 4 years prior to heading to Raleigh as a Graduate Transfer. He completed 523 of those passes, with 40 of those going for touchdowns. He also threw 29 interceptions.

In 2021, Chambers lit up the ECU defense for 405 yards and 2 touchdowns (1 interception), throwing the ball an obscene 61 times.

Jack Chambers is used to throwing the football.

What will give Syracuse a challenge this week in game prep, is the fact that Chambers also is used to running the football, and there isn’t much of that on tape from the Wolfpack offense over the past couple of years for them to watch.

In 4 years at Charleston Southern, Chambers rushed the ball 1,305 yards with 15 touchdowns.

There’s a reason that NC State wanted Chambers to be here, and there is a reason he wanted to be here…for such a time as this.

Now, if Chambers is the man behind center for the Wolfpack on Saturday, I fully expect NC State to try to run it down the throat of the Syracuse defense, but don’t expect them to never unleash Chambers to throw the ball at all.

He’s going to have to pass against the best defense he’s ever played against- except for in practice.

How much he’ll need to pass is the big question. It will be interesting to see our plan in action.
