NC State vs. Marshall: A Historical Perspective

Published

on

NC State and Marshall will face one another for the 6th time tomorrow. Heading into game, the Wolfpack have an undefeated (5-0) record over the Thundering Herd. Four of the five games have been in Carter-Finley Stadium.

Dave Doeren is 2-0 against Marshall, beating them in back-to-back years in 2017-18.

Even though NC State boasts a 5-0 record against Marshall, 3 of those 5 victories were come-from-behind victories.

In 2017, Marshall was up 20-10 in the 2nd Quarter, but NC State then scored 27 unanswered points. In 1991, the Wolfpack had to score twice in the final 60 seconds to secure a 15-14 victory. In 1993, NC State was down 17-10 with 10 minutes left, and the Wolfpack had to score twice to secure a 24-17 victory.

As you can see, most of the time, it’s not necessarily been an easy victory for the Wolfpack over Marshall.

Also, NC State has a connection with Marshall on their Coaching Staff. Wolfpack Running Backs Coach and Special Teams Coordinator Todd Goebbel was on the Thundering Herd staff from 2015-2018. While he wore many hats there, Goebbel was the Co-Offensive Coordinator for Marshall when NC State beat them in 2017 and 2018.
