NCAA Denies NC State’s Kam Woods Waiver for Immediate Eligibility

NC State just shared that Guard Kam Woods has been denied a waiver for immediate eligibility by the ACC. They also announced that they will be appealing the NCAA’s decision.

Woods played for North Carolina A&T last year, averaging 17.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.6 steals. He led A&T in points, assists and three-pointers, and earned Second Team All-CAA honors.

Prior to heading to Greensboro, Woods played for Northwest Florida State Community College, where he averaged 11.0 points, and shot 38.5% from beyond the arch. Ultimately, Woods was key in leading NFSCC to the NJCAA National Championship.

In his first year in college, Woods played for Troy, where he played in 23 games, starting in 12, averaging 10.3 points per game.

This was always a possibility, and Wolfpack Head Coach Kevin Keatts was upfront with Woods about it before he committed to NC State. Knowing this might happen, Woods was still willing to commit to run with the Wolfpack.

“Going without basketball (for) a year, yeah, that definitely would hurt, but I weighed the options,” Woods said. “I’m getting better. I’m at a better place. I will work on my game each day and get better from this. It don’t matter. I’m gonna take this year, if I don’t play, to get better.” (N&O)

This was always going to be a difficult waiver to attain. NC State is Woods’ third 4-year school. He has played at all three schools he has been at. Woods did unfortunately enroll at NC State after the new transfer rules were unveiled.

What Woods does have going in his favor is that both times that he transferred, it wad due to coaches being fired.

Woods has two years of eligibility left. Whether one of those will be used this year, is still yet to be seen.
