Dave Doeren and His Team Understand the Rivalry Against UNC

Published

on

NC State beat UNC 39-20 tonight, making it three straight victories against their rival. This is the 2nd time that the Wolfpack have gone on a 3-game winning streak against the Tar Heels under Dave Doeren. NC State has won 6 of the last 8 against UNC.

Dave Doeren understands what this rivalry against UNC means, and he it in his players.

Here’s a rundown of some of the quotes from Doeren tonight on how much he enjoys beating the Tar Heels.

“There’s nothing better than beating those baby blue boys over there like that.”

“It’s been 1,460 days since those pieces of s&%$ beat us.”

“When I first got to the school, at my opening press conference, as people were shaking my hand, half of the people said ‘Just beat UNC’, and I was like ‘Really?’ As time went on, I got a feel for why. There’s just a difference in the fanbases, and I’m not going to get ugly, but our fanbase is my kind of people. Let’s put it that way. This is a game between 2 schools that don’t like each other, and I get the opportunity to lead the charge, and I’m all about leading it.”

In his press conference after the game, he had this to say:

“It’s 3 in a row. It’s over 1,400 days since they’ve beat us. Rivalry games are huge. They are huge to our fans. They are huge to our alumni. We had a ton of former players back tonight. It’s what college football really is. It’s sad, because you see some of these rivalries getting dissolved because of conference realignment. That game with us and Carolina is an important game. It’s the oldest rivalry in the ACC. It goes back a long way.”

Payton Wilson after the game had this to say:

“If you want to have culture, come to Raleigh. Them boys in blue don’t know about it.”

Dave Doeren doesn’t like UNC, and that’s important to NC State fans, because they don’t like them either. UNC likes to pretend like this isn’t a rivalry…like they don’t care about it.

That’s fine.

Dave Doeren and his NC State teams will just keep embracing it, and allowing that dislike to lead them to continual victories.

Loved Payton Wilson’s comment, “This is all culture right here. If you want to have culture, come to Raleigh,” Wilson said in a postgame TV interview. “Them boys in blue don’t know about it.”

When I was at State (1971-1975) we said it a little differently, but the meaning was the same, “Agriculture is better than no culture at all.”

I was there at the same time. Carolina was the most arrogant team in the league and stuck it in our face every game. The great thing was, we had basketball to stick it to them. This team is turning out to be one of the best we have had. Didn’t look good after Duke. Whatever was done during the bye week, needs to be bottled and taken every week from here on out.

Also Holtz, coming from W&M, turned around FB in his first year. The Buckey brothers, Dave & Don, and the Baby Backs fullback Stan Fritts, fullback Charley Young, running back Roland Hooks, and running back Willie Burden.

Great game plan by Dave Doeren and execution by the players. Right on Red!
