Due to Court Ruling, NC State’s Kam Woods Could Technically Play Over the Next 14 Days

Yesterday Judge John Preston Bailey in West Virginia issued a Temporary Restraining Order against the NCAA, which will temporarily make players who are not eligible to play under current NCAA Transfer Rules, able to play during the length of the Restraining Order, which is a period of 14 days.

On December 27th, Bailey will have the ability to issue a Preliminary Injunction, which would continue to make players currently ineligible to play under the current NCAA Transfer Rules, eligible for the remainder of the trial, with no possibility of punishment for doing so, regardless of the outcome of the trial.

Dave Yost is the lead attorney issuing the complaint, and he had this to say after the hearing yesterday.

One of those 99 players that was denied a waiver was NC State Guard Kam Woods. When it was announced that Woods had been denied a waiver, NC State also announced they would be appealing the decision.

Woods played for North Carolina A&T last year, averaging 17.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.6 steals. He led A&T in points, assists and three-pointers, and earned Second Team All-CAA honors.

Prior to heading to Greensboro, Woods played for Northwest Florida State Community College, where he averaged 11.0 points, and shot 38.5% from beyond the arch. Ultimately, Woods was key in leading NFSCC to the NJCAA National Championship.

In his first year in college, Woods played for Troy, where he played in 23 games, starting in 12, averaging 10.3 points per game.

NC State is Woods’ third 4-year school. He has played at all three schools he has been at.

Under the current rules, the reason Woods has to sit out this season, is because this is the 2nd 4-year college he has transferred to prior to graduating.

One of the reasons prior to yesterday’s court ruling that Woods was optimistic he might have his waiver approved, was because coaches being fired was connected to his transfers, which is a possible exception under the current rules.

It will be interesting to see how NC State navigates things with Woods over the next 14 days.
