NC State 70 Tennessee 79: BY THE NUMBERS

Published

on

NC State lost a winnable game to #12 Tennessee tonight in San Antonio, falling 70-79 to the Volunteers. You can check out the Box Score here, but below is a breakdown of the game…BY THE NUMBERS.

NC State and Tennessee nearly shot the exact same percentages. The Wolfpack shot 43% from the field and the Volunteers shot 44%.

They both shot 44% from three, but Tennessee won this game with their shooting from beyond the arch. They might have shot the same percentage as NC State, but they shot 9 more threes, and made 4 more.

It’s crazy when you look at how even the numbers were tonight.

Both teams had 11 turnovers. Tennessee scored 16 points off those turnovers, and NC State scored 14.

NC State scored 26 points in the paint, and Tennessee scored 24. The Wolfpack had 12 second chance points, and the Volunteers had 13.

There are two areas of discrepancy of note. First, Tennessee had 15 offensive rebounds compared to NC State’s 8. Secondly, the Volunteers had 22 assists, and the Wolfpack had 13 assists.

DJ Horne was the Wolfpack’s 1st half MVP, and DJ Burns was the MVP of the 2nd half.

Horne finished with 16 points, on 6 of 12 shooting from the field, and 4 of 7 from three. He had 13 in the 1st half, and then took only 3 shots in the 2nd half. That can’t happen.

Burns scored 11 of his 15 points in the 2nd half. He also finished with 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

Jayden Taylor 11 points on 2 of 9 shooting. Casey Morsell was 2 of 7. Those two can’t shoot 4 of 16 and expect to win games.

The Wolfpack were +7 when Ben Middlebrooks was on the court. Unfortunately, he only played 8 minutes. Middlebrooks had 3 points, 3 boards and 3 blocks in that span of time. Two of his boards were on the offensive glass.

Ben Middlebrooks’ Offensive Rating was 217.9, which was a team high. For players that played 10+ minutes, D.J. Burn’s Offensive Rating of 121.8 was the highest. Casey Morsell’s Defensive Rating of 147.2 was the best on the team.

NC State lost a winnable to #12 Tennessee tonight in San Antonio, falling 70-79 to the Volunteers. Yes if we had a decent coach who knew how to call plays and provide the proper substitution scheme. We needed a real coach not someone that just rolls the ball on the court. Please get rid of this guy. Tired of seeing 8 guards play all the minutes. We need a new coach or a new big guy coach that KK will listen to and grow. Right now it’s the same pattern year after year.
