PI EXCLUSIVE: Canadian Forward Ismael Diouf Breaks Down Journey to NC State

Published

on

Earlier this week, the NC State Men’s Basketball team landed a commitment from Canadian Forward Ismael Diouf. He just wrapped up leading Laval University to the National Championship, and went on to be the #1 Draft Pick in the 2024 CEBL Draft. Instead of going the route of professional ball in the CEBL currently, he opted to enroll at NC State for his final two years of eligibility.

I caught up with Diouf to get his take on his journey to NC State.

Breakdown what it was like to win the National Championship this past season?

I had nothing to lose. We also were really prepared, especially against Victoria. I was really confident in defense, and it helped me in offense also.

It was incredible! Thanks to the team who have worked so hard since summer. Everybody did their role and that is why we won.

You really seemed to take off in the Final 8 Tournament. What do you think clicked for you in the postseason?

What did it mean for you to be drafted #1 overall in the CEBL Draft?

So thankful! For me it is a dream, but also a source of motivation to keep on working because it pays so much more then I thought.

When did NC State start recruiting you, and what stood out about them compared to other schools that were recruiting you? What was their pitch to you?

About 1-2 weeks ago. I didn’t visit any other schools, because I knew it was the right one for me. The coaching staff, team and facility look incredible. The visibility and the potential looks really promising.

Walk us through your visit to Raleigh. What did you do and what impression did it make on you?

i did a tour of the Men’s Basketball Building and the campus. It was really impressive. It was perfect and amazing. We went to PNC arena also. I was shocked to know that it could fit 20k spectators. I loved the city! Everything seems brand new, so I an really excited to live there.

What excites you about the NC State Basketball program?

The coaches, team, staff, campus, city, opportunity and competition…that’s why I am really excited to go there!
