NC State’s Depth Chart vs. Louisville (with notes)
NC State released their depth chart for the Louisville game today at Dave Doeren’s weekly press conference.
Quite a few young players have popped up on the depth chart for the 1st time.
- Redshirt Freshman Xavier Lyas is the third string defensive end behind Senior Darian Roseboro and Graduate Junior Deonte Holden. Lyas played in his first game of the season against Florida State, picking up 2 sacks in 23 snaps. He didn’t play at all against Wake Forest.
- Redshirt Sophomore Val Martin is the third string Nose Guard behind Senior Eurndraus Bryant and Redshirt Sophomore Shug Frazier. Martin has yet to play a snap in 2018. Frazier returned this week after missing FSU, but Bryant missed his 2nd straight game.
- Freshman De’Von Graves started the season as a cornerback, but has been moved to Strong Safety, recording 1 tackle against Wake Forest. He is the 3rd string Strong Safety behind Redshirt Junior Jarius Morehead and Redshirt Sophomore Isaiah Stallings. He has played 3 games strictly on special teams, and saw game snaps against Wake Forest, picking up his first tackle.
- Freshman Tyler Baker-Williams has moved back to safety, and is third string behind Redshirt Senior Dexter Wright and Junior Tim Kidd-Glass. Baker-Williams was moved to running back at the start of the season due to injuries, and had one carry in the season opener versus James Madison, and unfortunately fumbled it. He didn’t see action the next 5 games, but has played special teams the past three weeks.
NC State has signed Dave Doeren to a 2-year extension, but the extension comes with a raise. Doeren’s base salary in 2023 was $5.02 million.
According to Brian Murphy of WRALSports Fan, Doeren’s salary in 2024 will be $5.5 million, and it will increase by $125,000 each year of the contract. He can earn $1.325 million in academic and athletic performance bonuses on an annual basis.

The bonus structure is the same as it was in his previous contract (see above), but the section entitled “Playoff” has been updated as follows:
Former NC State Wide Receiver Julian Gray has committed to play for Liberty next year.
This past season, Gray had career highs in receptions (16) and receiving yards (170). He ranked 4th on the team in receptions, and 7th on the team in receiving yards.
Gray has served as NC State’s primary Kickoff Returner the past two seasons, averaging 24.9 yards per return. This past year, he averaged 26.0 yards per carry, which ranked 3rd in the ACC, and 11th nationally. It stands as the 5th best single-season average in school history.
Back in 2021, ON3 ranked Gray as a 4-star prospect, the #197 overall player nationally, and the #13 player in the state of North Carolina.
Gray has 2 more years of eligibility remaining.

There is something to be said with consistency and stability. Dave Doeren is entering his 12th season at NC State, which ties him for the 6th longest tenure in College Football.
The details of the contract have not been released, and I will break them down when they are revealed, but his annual salary before was $5.02 million.
