RELEASE: NC State Earns #10 Overall Seed in 2024 NCAA Baseball Tournament



Doak Field at Dail Park will play host to NC State’s seventh NCAA Regional in program history beginning this Friday, May 31.The Wolfpack will host second-seeded South Carolina, third-seeded James Madison and fourth-seeded Bryant in the Raleigh NCAA Regional.

The Wolfpack (33-20) earned the No. 10 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. NC State also makes its 34th postseason appearance and its 12th appearance since 2010. The Pack9 has made an NCAA Regional appearance in 18 of the past 21 tournaments dating back to 2003. Head coach Elliott Avent has now led his Wolfpack squads to an NCAA Regional 21 times during his coaching career in Raleigh, highlighted by seven Regional host appearances.

More information on game times and TV designations will become available later on Monday afternoon.

3 NC State Players will be Participating in the 2024 MLB Combine



319 players will be participating in the 2024 MLB Combine over June 18-23 at Chase Field, the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Three NC State players will be participating in the event:

Junior Catcher Jacob Cozart
Sophomore Center Fielder Eli Serrano III
Sophomore Pitcher Dominic Fritton

This will be the 4th MLB Combine, starting back in 2021. The Combine is invitation only, selected by a “committee of MLB, USA Baseball and MLB Club scouting executives, incorporating feedback from all 30 MLB Clubs.” (MLB)

Participating in the combine doesn’t effect a players collegiate eligibility.

Cozart was just named 2nd Team All-American by Perfect Game. He enters the College World Series with a .300 Batting Average, 19 Home Runs, 53 RBI’s, 60 Runs, an .430 On-Base Percentage and an OPS of 1.034.

Serrano III is hitting .297 with 9 Home Runs, 9 Doubles, 39 RBI’s and 56 Runs this season. He was named to the All-Freshman team last season.

Fritton hasn’t had the same success he saw as a Freshman last year, earning 1st Team Freshman All-American honors, with a 3.59 ERA, with 75 K’s in 62.2 innings. This year, Fritton is 3-6 with a 7.35 ERA, striking out 69 batters in 71 innings.

Previewing NC State’s College World Series Opponent: #2 Seed Kentucky



#10 overall seed NC State will face #2 overall seed Kentucky in the first round of games of the 2024 College World Series. The first pitch will be thrown at 2pm, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN. Before they take the field, here’s a preview of the Wildcats.

Kentucky is making their College World Series debut this weekend. They are 45-14, and they are currently tied for the most wins in a single season in school history (tying the 2012 team).

Nick Mingione is in his 8th year as the Wildcats Head Coach, and Perfect Game and NCBWA both honored him with their National Coach of the Year Award.

Kentucky won the regular season SEC title, but lost in pool play via double-elimination.

Senior Designated Hitter was named 1st Team All-SEC, leading the team with a .350 Batting Average. Junior Outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt earned 2nd Team All-ACC honors, leading the team in OPS (1.107), with a Batting Average of .346 and 14 Home Runs.

Junior Infielder Emilien Pitre earned a spot on the All-SEC Defensive team, and was named 3rd Team All-American by Rawlings & ABCA.

Senior 1st Baseman Ryan Nicholson led the squad with 21 Home Runs, with a Batting Average of .299, and an OPS of 1.080.

Senior Trey Pooser will likely be the Starting Pitcher for the Wildcats tomorrow. He enters the game boasting a 7-1 record with 3.46 ERA, striking out 79 batters in 83.1 innings. In the postseason, Pooser has been untouchable, with a 3-0 record, and a 0.47 ERA.

Junior Mason Moore is the 2nd part of Kentucky’s 1-2 punch on the mound. Moore 9-3 with a 4.93 ERA.

Kentucky is 5-0 thus far in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, defeating Western Michigan, Illinois and Indiana State in the Regional Round, and swept #15 overall seed Oregon State in the Super Regionals.

The Wildcats only gave up 2 runs over two games against Beavers in the Super Regionals. Over their past 4 games in the NCAA Tournament, Kentucky has given up a total of 3 runs.

NC State’s Alec Makarewicz Named ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-American



RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State third baseman Alec Makarewicz was named a 2024 ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-American, as announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Friday morning.

Makarewicz has now earned ABCA/Rawlings All-Atlantic Region First Team honors, NCBWA Third Team All-America accolades and ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-America honors in one week. This week he and teammate Jacob Cozart became NC State baseball’s 46th and 47th student-athletes, respectively, to be tabbed an All-American.

Makarewicz, who has already been named Second Team All-ACC and was the NCAA Raleigh Regional’s Most Outstanding Player, adds yet another personal accolade to a sensational season for the Wolfpack. The third baseman leads NC State with a .380 batting average, 80 RBI, 22 homers, 95 hits and a .744 slugging percentage.

The Longwood, Florida native leads NC State with a .414 batting average so far in the NCAA Tournament, pacing the Pack with 12 hits, five doubles and 26 total bases. Makarewicz batted .400 (6-for-15) with two homers and four RBI to help lead NC State back to Omaha for the fourth time in program history and the third time since 2013.

Makarewicz’s 22 homers now rank tied for sixth in NC State single-season history. His 80 RBI rank tied for second in Wolfpack single-season history, needing just seven more to tie Turtle Zaun for the program record. The Wolfpack third baseman is also tied with Tony Ellison for the single-season program record for total bases (186), needing just one more base hit to set the new record.

NC State will face Kentucky in its opening round game at the 2024 NCAA Men’s College World Series. NC State and Kentucky will face off on Saturday at Omaha’s Charles Schwab Field at 2 p.m. ET. Saturday’s game will be televised on ESPN.

NC State’s Jacob Cozart Earns Perfect Game Second Team All-American Honors



RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State catcher Jacob Cozart was named a 2024 Perfect Game Second Team All-American on Wednesday afternoon.

Cozart, who was just named a Buster Posey Award Finalist on Thursday, earns the first All-America honor of his stellar Wolfpack career. After teammate Alec Makarewicz was named an NCBWA Third Team All-American earlier on Wednesday, Cozart is the 47th student-athlete in program history to earn All-America accolades.

The Wolfpack catcher enters the College World Series with a .300 batting average, 19 homers, 53 RBI, 60 runs scored and a .430 on-base percentage. Cozart’s 49 walks rank first among all NC State players as he enters this weekend’s Omaha matchups with an OPS of 1.034.

Defensively, Cozart has thrown out 13 of 40 runners attempting to steal this season and sported a .994 fielding percentage, recording 433 putouts and 39 assists. During the ACC regular season, Cozart ranked first among all ACC catchers with 13 runners caught stealing.

Cozart was also named a First Team All-ACC honoree and to the Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List earlier this season. He was one of just 45 student-athletes nationally named to the list.
