Pack Puts It Together, Runs Over FGCU 82-62

Published

on

Cat Barber started over Tyler Lewis and Jordan Vandenberg returned from injury as Mark Gottfried unveiled his team’s new look lineup in impressive fashion

The Wolfpack was dominant in every aspect of this one. They controlled the boards, defended well and knocked down nearly every open shot they got, dubbing FGCU 82-62. Here are the game notes.

Cat Barber surprisingly started over Tyler Lewis. The freshman answered the bell by going for 12 points and dishing out 6 assists. He did have 5 TOs, but he looked really good and gave State another dimension they’ve been lacking. Lewis has struggled of late. When he’s not hitting his shots and State isn’t able to get out on the break the offense sometimes can become stagnant. Now, don’t get me wrong, Tyler Lewis is going to play and he’s going to be a huge factor on this team, but the point is that there are times when Barber is simply the better option. Tonight was one of those times. Barber made a lot of big plays with the shot clock winding down, he made some big time passes and was able to get into the lane and make things happen. Couple all that with the fact that he’s playing great defense for a freshman and you can see why he’s earning minutes. I don’t think this is a one time thing. Barber kicked this team into a new gear and was yet another weapon Mark Gottfried has at his disposal.

Vandenberg is back and fulfilling promise he showed as a freshman. The thinner, more conditioned, more disciplined Vandenberg looked great tonight. He finished with 9 points and 10 boards, but best of all, he altered shots and knocked around rebounds that otherwise would have found their way into the hands of a FGCU big. Big V added 2 blocks and 2 assists, but for the first time in a long time he looked comfortable. He was running the floor, throwing his weight around and really causing havoc on the boars. All in all, I think we see that JV is going to be a giant piece to this puzzle. He needs to stay healthy and out of foul trouble. If he can, then NC State has a legit shot to shock some people.

– What more can we say about TJ Warren. The guy is a pro and he’s impressing every single time out. In this one he was nearly unstoppable. #TJBuckets went for 30 points and 9 boards. His midrange game and touch around the rim are just uncanny. Wish his new found quickness and his shot coming along, Warren is going to be a major force all season.

Dez Lee looked good once again. Cat Barber did overshadow him, but his defense was phenomenal and he did finish with 9 points and 4 boards. Lee is such a strong finisher and is so controlled,  yet physical when he goes to the rim. He’s sharing minutes with Turner right now, as Lewis seems to be bearing the brunt of Barber’s increased role.

-Freeman and Washington continue to look good. KWash went for 6 points and 5 boards in limited action and Freeman got 32 minutes, scored 2 points and had 4 boards. I think it’s safe to say that Gott loves the way this kid plays. He’s physical, he defends well and he’s strong. Washington and Anya have been good, but Freeman is bringing the most to the table right now.

– Speaking of Anya, the big freshman was as billed. Three dunks in the span of 5 minutes and 2 big blocks for Beejay. He still needs to lose weight because his rebounding could use work, but his massive wingspan is showing that it can help him be productive in limited minutes this season.

– After a lot of preseason hype, Ralston Turner is settling into this role a little better. With Turner taking less (and better) shots, it opens up the offense to run through Barber and Warren.

State out-rebounded FGCU 43-25. Part of it was that the Eagles were without one of their best bigs, but it was also thanks to Vandy, who we a monster on the glass.

Notable Quotes:

Vandy on the 360 alley oop:
“I thought Cat would throw it a little bit higher and he didn’t, I don’t know exactly what happened. I just know the ball went in the basket and I hurt my finger. It was fun. It’s just fun to run the floor. As soon as I saw the ball behind me, I just took off running. It was like, ‘Come on, Cat!’ so he threw it.”

Vandy on his first game back with the team:
“The first game is the most important because you can try to lead as much as you want but if you don’t demonstrate on the floor what you can do, they ain’t going to listen to you. I think this game at least shows them ‘Hey, I can play basketball’ so what I’m saying, you can take notice to, regardless of how much older I am than them.”

Vandy on ‘his time to shine’:
I knew this was it.  I wasn’t going to be behind Rich, DeShawn, Tracy Smith, or Dennis Horner. If this goes out to the people, they’ll be like, ‘Who the hell is Dennis Horner and Tracy Smith?’ I’ve been here a long time.”

Gottfried on the win:
“I thought that was a very good team win. A lot of guys contributed in a lot of different ways, both offensively, defensively and on rebounding. I was proud of our group to bounce back against a good solid group of players from Florida Gulf Coast. They had a lot of success last year. It is a good team win for our group.”

Gottfried on starting Cat over Tyler Lewis:
“I felt like it was time for Cat. I thought he’s caught up in the time that he missed. Defensively, he changes things for us at the point of our defense.”

 Highlights:

Next game is Saturday against Eastern Kentucky at 8pm.

A post shared by Michael O’Connell (@michaeloc_12)

Today was the final day graduate players could enter the Portal.

This past season, O’Connell averaged 5.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists for the Wolfpack, starting 22 of the 41 games he played in.

O’Connell took over as NC State’s starting Point Guard on January 30th in a win against Miami.

He only scored in double figures in 9 of his 41 games this season, but 6 of those came in postseason play (5 in the ACC Tournament). O’Connell took things to another level in the ACC Tournament, playing aggressive on the offensive end, looking for his shot, and attacking the rim.

NC State played it’s best basketball of the season when O’Connell was running the show. He ranked 3rd in the ACC in Assist/Turnover Ratio (2.5).

Heading into next season, with a lineup filled with new faces, having the calming presence of a veteran leader like O’Connell is reassuring.

ECU Transfer Forward Ezra Ausar to NC State is Trending Up

Published

on

ECU Transfer Power Forward Ezra Ausar (6’9″/240) was on an Official Visit to NC State yesterday, and according to analysts at ON3 and 247Sports, things are trending in the right direction for the Wolfpack.

Jamie Shaw of ON3 submitted a prediction for Ausar to eventually commit to NC State yesterday morning.

Cory Smith of 247Sports submitted a crystal ball projection for Ausar to run with the Wolfpack this morning.

Ausar just wrapped up his Sophomore season in Greenville, averaging 11.4 points and 4.7 rebounds, shooting 51.4% from the field. As a Freshman, he was named to the AAC All-Freshman Team, averaging 9.8 points and 5.3 rebounds.

Ausar is a consensus 4-Star prospect in the Transfer Portal, and ON3 ranks him as the #60 overall player in the Portal and the #10 Power Forward.

Originally from Atlanta, Ausar played his Senior Season of High School at Liberty Heights Athletic Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina. ON3 ranked Ausar as a 4-Star prospect coming out of high school, the #94 overall player nationally, and the #2 player in the state of North Carolina.

Ausar has visited Seton Hall, Georgia Tech, met over Zoom with Georgetown, and had an in-home visit with Utah. John Calipari and his staff at Arkansas have been in touch with Ausar, as well as Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, Arizona State, West Virginia, Iowa State and St. John’s. (Link)

At this point, it’s good news that Ausar has no visits scheduled after the visit to NC State.

Ausar has 2 years of eligibility remaining, and NC State currently has 1 scholarship remaining.
