Freshman PG Braxton Beverly denied waiver. Will not play this season.

According to Gary Parrish from CBS, Braxton Beverly’s waiver was denied and he will not be able to play this season.

The NCAA is a joke. I think this confirms it. UNC gets away with proven rampant academic fraud committed over 20 some years of giving fake classes to keep kids eligible and Beverly ATTENDS a few classes and it punished for transferring. What a nice example they are setting for student-athletes.

If you don’t know the story, the TLDR is that Beverly committed to OSU, decided to be a good student and go to summer school, found out his coach was leaving and asked for a release (which was given.) He never attended formal practice at OSU but the NCAA punished him anyway. For a more detailed version, read this.

So, I guess NC State is just going to sit back and take it like they normally do.

Usually, I’m for being the bigger man and just accepting your fate, putting your head down and getting back to work. But seeing how the UNC case played out, I wish NC State would just lawyer up and take the fight to the NCAA, all while continuing to suit up Beverly night in and night out.

Sure, the NCAA bylaws state that if he attends a class at another University, technically he has to sit out a year, but what if you take a page out of UNC’s book and challenge that rule as unfair and not within the realm of their authority.

Isn’t going to class an academic issue? Giving fake classes and guys NOT going to class was, so why is this different? He never attended a practice with the team, so technically he wasn’t ‘on the team’ yet. So maybe that rule isn’t fair and maybe NC State should get their lawyers in to bully them into never-ending legal battle. It seems the NCAA backs down pretty quickly when it comes to nit-picking bylaws in the legal system.

According to the release, it’s likely NC State will just take the ruling and move on, but at some point, you have to stand up for yourself don’t you? After you lost Henderson last year thanks to the NCAA denying a waiver that claimed 7 minutes constituted an entire season,  and Beverly this year, maybe you get sick of getting pushed around.
