NC State crushed UNC 42-19 last night in the regular season finale in Carter-Finley Stadium, beating the Tar Heels for the 5th straight time, tying the school record for most consecutive wins against their rival.

The Wolfpack has  owned the Tar Heels under Dave Doeren, winning 8 of the last 10 games. Dating back to 1894, when the series began, NC State has never had a stretch of 8 wins over a span of 10 years.

Doeren knows how important this game is, and he’s known it from Day 1.

I mean, I probably wouldn’t be here if I didn’t, and that’s the reality. I mean, these games mean a lot. They mean a lot to the everybody who supports these programs. Like for me, for their school, for all of them, this weekend’s full of these games, right? The rivalry game matters, matters a lot, and I take a lot of pride in it, I do. (Link)

Yeah, I mean, to me, losing to them is unacceptable. I take a lot of pride in that rivalry game. It’s 9 wins out of 13, 8 of the last 10. That sounds pretty good, feels good, sounds good. I’m going to enjoy, I’m glad you told me that, because I didn’t know. But it’s very meaningful, man.

It goes back to my first day here on the job. I mean, can’t tell you how many people welcomed me and at the end said, ‘Whatever you do, beat them.’ That really resonated. (Link)

Over the last 20 years?

14-6.

Yes, UNC holds a 68-41-6 record all-time in the series, but plain and simple, NC State has dominated the boys in baby blue the past 20 years.
