The first college football game ever scheduled to be played in Brazil is no longer happening.
NC State University and the University of Virginia announced that their 2026 season opener, originally slated for Rio de Janeiro, will instead be played in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The ACC matchup had been scheduled for August 29 and was set to make history as the first college football game played in Brazil.
Instead, the game will now return to its original location.
Official Statement
NC State released the following statement regarding the change:
Following extensive review with operational partners and international stakeholders, the 2026 NC State at Virginia football game, originally scheduled to be played in Brazil, will be relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia, for this conference matchup.
This change follows communication from Athlete Advantage, which informed the ACC and participating schools that the event could not be conducted.
Originally scheduled to be played in Week 0, the ACC, NC State and Virginia are working with the NCAA and ESPN to confirm the game will remain on the originally scheduled date of Saturday, August 29.
Fans who purchased tickets or travel packages for the event through the official College Football Brasil website will receive refunds. Refund administration is being coordinated through applicable ticketing, payment processing, and event partners.
Further details on tickets for the game at Scott Stadium will be forthcoming.
Back To The Original Plan
Ironically, before Brazil ever entered the conversation, the game was already scheduled to be played in Charlottesville.
Originally, NC State and Virginia agreed to a home-and-home non-conference series designed to strengthen both programs’ schedules.
When the Brazil opportunity emerged, the game was moved overseas.
Now, after the international event fell through, the contest returns to where it was supposed to be all along.
Financial Gain for NC State?
Despite the disappointment of playing the first college football game ever in Brazil, NC State just got a lot richer. As a result of Athlete Advantage cancelling the contest, they will pay NC State $1.5 million.
Here’s the exact language from the contract:
If AA withdraws from or cancels the Event at any time and for any reason other than the University’s material breach of this Agreement, a force majeure event under Section 13, or as a result of the Participation Review Process provided in Section 5, it shall pay a cancellation fee to the University in the amount of one million five hundred thousand dollars ($1,500,000) (the “Cancellation Fee”). The Cancellation Fee shall be due and payable no later than thirty (30) days following AA’s notice of withdrawal or cancellation.
What This Means For NC State
From a competitive standpoint, this isn’t ideal for the Wolfpack.
A neutral-site game in Brazil would have eliminated any true home-field advantage.
Instead, NC State will now open the season in a hostile road environment against an ACC opponent.
Rather than playing before a crowd split between curious international fans and traveling supporters, the Wolfpack will walk into a stadium filled primarily with Virginia fans.
