Here is a look at the last time certain receiving milestones were accomplished in a game by a NC State player:
The last time…
A player had 100+ receiving yards: Bo Hines (8-103) vs. Florida St. 9/27/14
A player had 150+ receiving yards: Tobais Palmer (7-219-3) vs. Clemson 11/17/12
A player had 200+ receiving yards: Tobais Palmer (7-29-3) vs. Clemson 11/17/12
A player had a 50+ yard reception: Bo Hines (54) vs. Florida St. 9/27/14
Two players over 100 receiving yards in the same game: Tobais Palmer (7-219-3) & Mario Carter (7-105-1) vs. Clemson 11/17/12
A player scored three or more receiving touchdowns: Tobais Palmer (7-219-3) vs. Clemson 11/17/12
A player had 10 receptions in a game: Bryan Underwood (11) vs. Wake Forest 10/5/13
A player scored a touchdown on his first career reception: Koyal George vs. Virginia 10/27/07
The question now becomes ‘when will these milestones be accomplished next?’
The player returning that had the most receptions last season is running back Matt Dayes (32) and the player returning that had the most receiving yards is tight end David Grinnage (368). Coach Doeren has spoken all offseason about the consistency of wide receivers Bra’Lon Cherry, Jonathan Alston, and Jumichael Ramos, but none of them produced eye popping statistics last season. There are quite a few redshirt freshman behind these wideouts that give the Wolfpack receiver corps some depth. ‘How good will this unit be?’ and ‘How good does NC State need it to be?’ are two very valid questions. I’m not saying that the NC State receiving unit is bad. I’m just saying everyone is correct in being unsure of what to expect.
In regards to these milestones, we will have to see if a star arises out of the bunch. I think this unit can be solid as a unit, but whether or not there is a 100 yard…150 yard…200 yard receiver in the lot is to be determined. The NC State running backs are so strong this season, that Brissett might not air the ball out enough for some of these milestones to be reached. David Grinnage was the closest out of all the returning receivers to having a 100 yard performance last season, with 87 yards against Florida St. Matt Dayes was the closest to 10 receptions, with 6 in the season opener against Georgia Southern.
I think Jumichael Ramos could breakout this season, and fully expect David Grinnage and Matt Dayes to get better, but I think the x-factor in breaking quite a few of these milestones is true freshman Nyheim Hines. He possesses a level of raw athleticism, speed and playmaking ability that no other receiver on NC State has. Hines has the ability to take a screen pass 50+ yards just as easily as he could beat a defender on fly route with his speed for 50+yards. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hines name replace some of the above names by seasons end.
