NC State continues to add pitching depth through the transfer portal.

San Jose State right-hander Jesse Gutierrez has committed to the Wolfpack, becoming the latest arm to join Chris Hart’s first roster in Raleigh.

The 6-foot-1 pitcher arrives with four years of Division I experience and a track record that includes two highly productive seasons at the Mountain West level.

Looking for a Bounce-Back Season

Gutierrez is coming off a difficult 2026 campaign.

In 14 appearances, including 10 starts, he posted:

1-4 record
6.55 ERA
31 strikeouts
45.1 innings pitched
1.74 WHIP

While the numbers weren’t where he wanted them to be, NC State is clearly betting on the pitcher who showed significantly more success during the previous two seasons.

Strong Production in 2025

Just one year earlier, Gutierrez was one of San Jose State’s most effective arms.

3-2 record
2.36 ERA
0.90 WHIP
.196 opponent batting average

Those numbers paint the picture of a pitcher who consistently limited baserunners and made life difficult on opposing hitters.

A WHIP under 1.00 is elite at any level of college baseball.

Solid 2024 Campaign

Gutierrez also enjoyed success during the 2024 season.

4-4 record
3.47 ERA

Combined with his 2025 production, it’s easy to see why NC State believes there is still plenty of upside here despite last season’s struggles.

Why This Makes Sense For NC State

The Wolfpack entered the offseason needing to rebuild portions of its pitching staff.

With Jacob Dudan expected to begin his professional career and several innings needing to be replaced, Chris Hart and his staff have prioritized adding experienced arms through the portal.

It’s a veteran pitcher who has already demonstrated he can succeed at the Division I level.

Final Takeaway

If NC State gets the 2025 version of Jesse Gutierrez, this could end up being one of the more underrated portal additions of the offseason.

A pitcher who posted a 2.36 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP, and held opponents below .200 isn’t easy to find in June.

The Wolfpack is betting that his difficult 2026 season was the exception rather than the rule.

If they’re right, NC State may have found another valuable piece for its 2027 pitching staff.
