4-Star Offensive Tackle JoVaughn Gwyn Talks NC State

Published

on

After winning a North Carolina state championship last night, 4-star 2018 Offensive Tackle Jovaughn Gwyn talked to Rivals Adam Friedman, and he talked the Shrine Bowl, and his recruitment.

“I’m not sure when I’ll sign,” he said. “I need to sit down and talk with my parents and if I’m ready then I’ll do it during the early signing period.

“I talked to Duke, N.C. State, and South Carolina the most,” said Gwyn. “I went to my N.C. State official visit last Saturday. It went really good. The connection with the players was really good and stands out. I’m not sure where they sit on my list right now.

“I have to take my official visit to Duke,” he said. “I just found out about their offensive line coach leaving. I have to think about what that does for them.

“I’m supposed to take my official visit down to South Carolina this Saturday after the Shrine Bowl,” Gwyn said. “The new offensive coordinator doesn’t change my thoughts on them. They had to do what they had to do. Things will probably be better for them after this. They’re saying the offensive line coach is staying. I’m expecting to get down there and talk more personally with the coaches.”(Rivals)

NC State has put themselves in a great place to land Gwyn, and his addition would push the Wolfpack’s class into the Top-20. We will have to see when and who Gwyn chooses, but if the shirt under his pads in the championship game last night is any sign, the Wolfpack are sitting pretty.

247Sports report that came out after Rivals states that Gwyn is down to just NC State and South Carolina.

3-Star 2019 RB Micah Kelly Includes NC State in Final-4

Published

on

3-Star 2019 Running Back Micah Kelly committed to Toledo on Sunday, but after picking up 3 Power-5 offers over the past 3 days, he has reopened his commitment, and is considering NC State, Louisville, Kansas State and Toledo.

Louisville offered last Friday, Kansas State offered the same day he committed to Toledo, and NC State offered earlier today. Is it coincidence that Kelly decommitted from Toledo shortly after receiving the offer? I don’t know.

According to the above tweet, Kelly will be signing with his future school on February 6th, which is National Signing Day.

Kelly rushed for 1,560 yards (5.9 yards per carry) for Ocean Springs (Ocean Springs, Mississippi) this season, with 16 rushing touchdowns.

All-American 4-Star RB Jamious Griffin Decommits from NC State

Published

on

The writing has been on the wall for sometime now.

All-American 2019 4-Star Running Back Jamious Griffin has decommitted from NC State.

Griffin could end up at Georgia Tech or Virginia Tech with one of his brothers. He just took an Official Visit to Auburn this past weekend. Clemson is starting to creep in.

While NC State is still a possibility, my money is with Georgia Tech. It’s the hometown team, that now has a coach that doesn’t run the triple option, and it’s a dream of his to play with one of his brothers.

This is a major blow to the Wolfpack 2019 recruiting class. It’s a big blow to next season. Griffin was going to play right away. Heck, he might have won the starting job, and that’s no disrespect to Ricky Person or Zonovan Knight.

Depth will be an issue in the backfield next season for NC State. They return Sophomore Ricky Person, who when heathy, is very talented. True Freshman Zonovan Knight gives a spark of breakaway speed. Redshirt Freshman Trent Pennix picked up some experience this year, while holding onto his redshirt. Redshirt Senior Damontay Rhem earned a scholarship prior to last season.

With signing day a couple of weeks away (February 6), expect the coaching staff to find another running back, whether it be from the high school or JUCO ranks.

4-Star 2020 OT Mitchell Mayes Took an Unofficial Visit to NC State Yesterday

Published

on

4-Star 2020 Offensive Tackle Mitchell Mayes (6’5″/295) took an unofficial visit to NC State yesterday.

Mayes plays at Sanderson High School in Raleigh, and is former teammates of NC State Defensive Tackle Alim McNeil and Running Back Trent Pennix.

247Sports ranks Mayes as the #24 overall player nationally in the 2020 recruiting class, the #3 Offensive Tackle, and the #2 player in the state of North Carolina.

Mayes holds offers from NC State, Clemson, Duke, Mississippi St., Syracuse, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Florida State and Boston College.

NC State was the 1st of all these teams to offer (January 21st, 2018).

Mayes has been a frequent visitor at NC State, and the Wolfpack has been at the top of his list for some time now. He is a consensus Top-250 player in their backyard, which makes him a must get.

As a Junior, Mayes earned Under Armour All-American honors. His highlights from this past season are below.
