Football Recruiting Update – June 14, 2018

Recent Commits:

3* OC Dylan McMahon – Rated one of the top 10 Centers in the Country in the 2019 class. Visited Raleigh on the weekend of 6/8.

3* OG/DT Zovon Lindsay – Rated in the top 80 Defensive Tackles in the Country in the 2019 class.  Will probably play OG for us.

3* S Jakeen Harris – Rated the #99 Safety in the Country by 24/7 sports.  Runs a 4.5 40 and is super athletic.  Will play NLB or Safety for us.

4* DE Savion Jackson – Rated the #29 Overall Prospect in the Country and the #3 SDE in the Country by 24/7 sports, Rated the #12 Defensive End and the #129 Overall Prospect in the Country by Rivals, Rated the #6 Defensive End and the #31 Overall Prospect in the Country by ESPN.

Camp Update:

Camps have officially gotten started at State.

Next One Day Camps – 6/15, 6/16, 6/22, and 6/23.

HS 7 on 7 Camps will be 6/15 and 6/22.

Alpha Wolf Showcase will be sometime around 6/23

QB Recruiting Update:

Looks like Target 3* QB Zach Calzada is very close to committing to Texas A&M.

New Offers (from Camps):

DE/LB Jaylen Hudson – Attends Cape Fear HS (Fayetteville, NC).  Impressed our coaches with his athleticism at camp last week.

Quote from 24/7 sports about his performance:

“Hudson was the most physically impressive prospect of the weekend. Hudson checked in at 6-foot-3 and 223 pounds. He registered a 4.65 40-yard dash, 32.8-inch vertical jump and had a 6-foot-11 wingspan. Although raw, he performed extremely well from start to finish.”

Sounds to me like Hudson is an athletic freak similar to some prospects we have “found” at camps in the past, and albeit he is a raw prospect, but screams Weakside Defensive End to me.

LS Joseph Shimko – Attends Wall Township HS (Wall, New Jersey). Impressed our coaches at the Specialist Camp on 6/8/18.

Rated the #7 overall LS in the country by Chris Rubio.

Here’s what Rubio had to say about him:

“Shimko crushed it at the Rubio Long Snapping Fall Camp in OH on December 17, 2017. Ended up winning yet another camp. As stated below, Shimko is one of the only Long Snappers in the country that actually gets better as he gets tired. It is simply amazing and impressive to watch. Massive jump in the rankings and he is right on the cusp of being a 5 Star Rubio Long Snapper. Major competitions headed his way to challenge him at VEGAS XXXI.

Shimko did really well at the Rubio Long Snapping Fall Camp in NC on November 19, 2017. Athletic Long Snapper that is one of the rare ones that actually gets better, the more he snaps. As everyone else gets tired, Shimko just keeps getting stronger. Like to see him focus on locking down his spiral to increase the catchability of his ball and make sure his snapping motion is more consistent. By increasing the consistency of his snapping motion it will also increase the consistency of Shimko’s snap speeds. He can hover from mid .6s to high .7s and I want to see him locked into all times under .70 at VEGAS XXXI. Tremendous potential on this Long Snapper and he is right on the cusp of greatness.

Shimko was dominant, once, again out in NJ and absolutely crushed it at the Rubio Long Snapping Fall Camp in NJ on October 8th, 2017. He, yet again, was the accuracy and speed champion of the whole camp. Very athletic and can easily be a factor on the punt coverage team. Ball is easily sub .75. The bigger and stronger he gets, the better he will be and more he will be ready for college. Shimko is the real deal and could easily be a TOP 12 member at VEGAS XXXI. College coaches should keep a very close eye on this Long Snapper from the northeast. ”

Surprises at Camp:

Hunter Williams – 2019 WR/CB –

Quote from 24/7 sports.com:

“This player was a personal favorite of mine during the Friday portion of camp. Williams checked in with some added muscle at 5-foot-11, 157 pounds — up from his 141-pound mark in the 247Sports database — and showed some serious speed during the camp. He caught the eye of nickels coach Aaron Henry, who was tracking the shuttle run, which Williams ran in 4.13 seconds, the fastest mark during the Friday portion.”

“Williams also ran a 4.45 40-yard dash, proving he has solid straight-line speed and great change of direction. Currently playing wideout with Fayetteville (Ga.) Whitewater, Williams made several highlight reel catches in 1-on-1 drills. Holding offers from Army and Air Force, Williams might not pick up an offer from State, but he certainly proved he can hold his own.

Junior Stats: 20 catches for 338 yards and 3 Touchdowns, 20 Tackles, 1 Interception, 5 Passes Deflected

In my opinion, he looks like he could be another Thayer Thomas type prospect, who is offered a preferred walk-on spot.

Upcoming Official Visits:

June 14 – 3* JUCO DT Savion Williams (Rated the #4 JUCO DT in the Country by 24/7 sports), 4* DE Derrick McClendon (Rated the #17 WDE in the Country by 24/7 sports), 3* OT Carter Colquitt (Rated the #38 OT in the Country by Rivals), Commit 3* LB Jaylon Scott from Shelby, NC

June 21 – 3* OT Triston Miller (Rated the #63 OT in the Country by 24/7 sports), 3* CB Warren Burrell (Rated the #40 CB in the Country by 24/7 sports).

Recent Commits to Other Schools:

Target 3* QB Spencer Brasch – Committed to California

Target 3* Mataio Soli – Committed to Arkansas

Target 3* S Anthony Harris – Committed to Tennessee (Probably would not have qualified to attend State anyway)

Target 3* QB Kedon Slovis – Committed to Southern Cal

Upcoming Announcements:

6/18 – Target 4* CJ Clark – Should be to Georgia

Defensive Line Target Update:

It looks like State will try to sign two more Defensive Tackles and one more Defensive End in this year’s class (keep in mind, a lot of defensive ends can rotate over to Defensive Tackle in our scheme).

Priority Targets at Defensive Tackle:

4* Joshua Harris – Very impressed by State at camp last weekend

3* Ben Smiley – We have continued to increase our recruiting efforts with him lately, in his top 5

3* Jalar Holley – Visited Raleigh last weekend, we made his top 4, we are recruiting Georgia well lately

3* Savion Williams – Visiting Raleigh on 6/14, top JUCO target, Pitt and WVU are our competition for him at this time

Priority Targets at Defensive End:

3* Derrick McClendon – Visiting Raleigh on 6/14, competition for him looks to be FSU at this time

3* Jaylen Hudson – Just offered, very athletic but raw, reminds me a lot of Joseph Boletepeli

3* Jahfari Harvey – Recently offered, looks like he is heavily leaning to Miami at this time

3* Terrell Dawkins – We have looked good for him for a while, main competition is Tennessee

3* Christian Rorie – We have been his leader for a long time, local kid

3* Brandon Dorlus – Another recent offer, Miami and South Carolina are showing a lot of interest

3* Norell Pollard – We also made his top 8 list recently, very athletic but undersized (6’1″, 260)

3* Mario Kendricks – We are in his top 5 list, but it looks like he is leaning to Virginia Tech

3* Ahmad Craig – We have recently made his top 8 schools list.  He is HS teammates with OL Targets Reece McIntyre and Carter Colquitt

Next Expectations:

With 7 on 7 camps coming up this weekend, look for State to get a Linebacker, Safety, Corner, or Wide Receiver prospect to commit.
