The 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway, and while no former NC State players are representing their countries this summer, the Wolfpack has produced two players who have reached soccer’s biggest stage.

Yesterday we highlighted Tab Ramos.

Today, we turn our attention to another NC State and United States Men’s National Team legend: Pablo Mastroeni.

The former Wolfpack midfielder represented the United States in both the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups, making five World Cup appearances.

Known for his toughness, leadership, and relentless style of play, Mastroeni became a key figure during one of the most successful eras in U.S. Soccer history.

2002 FIFA World Cup

Mastroeni’s inclusion on the 2002 World Cup roster was one of the biggest surprises for the United States.

He had earned his first USMNT cap just one year earlier and was the only player on the roster who had not appeared during World Cup qualifying.

An injury to veteran midfielder Chris Armas opened the door.

He started three matches during the tournament and played a major role in one of the greatest World Cup runs in U.S. history.

Historic Victory Over Portugal

Mastroeni started in the United States’ stunning 3-2 upset victory over Portugal in the opening match.

The Americans entered as massive underdogs, but their aggressive play and defensive intensity shocked one of the tournament favorites.

Mastroeni’s work in midfield helped set the tone for the entire World Cup.

Beating Mexico

The United States followed with one of the most memorable victories in program history.

A 2-0 win over Mexico in the Round of 16 sent the Americans to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1930.

Mastroeni played a key role in the defensive effort, helping the United States record its first World Cup knockout-round shutout since 1950.

Quarterfinal Run

Mastroeni also started in the quarterfinal against Germany.

The Americans fell 1-0 in a tightly contested match, ending a remarkable tournament run.

Germany would eventually advance to the World Cup Final.

The United States finished 2-1 in Mastroeni’s three starts, and his performance throughout the tournament established him as a fixture in the national team setup.

2006 FIFA World Cup

Four years later, Mastroeni returned to the World Cup as an established veteran.

Unfortunately, the tournament didn’t unfold nearly as well for the United States.

The Americans finished 0-2-1 and were eliminated in the group stage.

One of the Most Controversial Matches in World Cup History

Mastroeni started the United States’ 1-1 draw against Italy in a match that quickly descended into chaos.

The game featured three red cards and remains one of the most controversial World Cup matches involving the United States.

Late in the first half, Mastroeni was sent off after a hard challenge on Italian midfielder Andrea Pirlo.

FIFA later fined him and issued a three-match suspension.

The punishment forced him to miss the final group-stage match against Ghana and carried over into the 2007 Gold Cup.

Despite the disappointing ending, Mastroeni remained one of the most important players of the era for the United States.

United States National Team Career

Mastroeni finished his international career with:

  • 65 appearances
  • 2 FIFA World Cups
  • 3 CONCACAF Gold Cup Championships

Gold Cup Titles

  • 2002
  • 2005
  • 2007

Few American midfielders of his generation were as consistently trusted in major international competitions.

MLS Legend

Mastroeni’s professional résumé is equally impressive.

He spent 16 seasons in Major League Soccer and became one of the greatest players in Colorado Rapids history.

Today, Mastroeni remains heavily involved in the game as head coach of Real Salt Lake.

🎯 Final Takeaway

Tab Ramos may have been NC State’s first World Cup star, but Pablo Mastroeni ensured he wouldn’t be the last.

The Wolfpack legend helped lead the United States to one of its greatest World Cup runs in 2002, earned 65 international caps, won three Gold Cups, became an MLS icon, and continues to impact the game today as a head coach.

As the 2026 World Cup unfolds, Mastroeni remains one of the most accomplished soccer players ever to wear an NC State uniform.
