The 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway, and while no former NC State players are representing their countries this summer, the Wolfpack has produced a select few players who have reached soccer’s biggest stage.

Only two former NC State players have ever appeared in a FIFA World Cup, and perhaps none left a larger mark than Midfielder Tab Ramos.

The Wolfpack legend represented the United States in three separate World Cups, appearing in 1990, 1994, and 1998.

At the time, Ramos was one of the pioneers of modern American soccer, helping establish the United States as a competitive presence on the international stage. Ramos was one of the first players to make 3 World Cup appearances for the United States, paving the way for players like Landon Donovan (12 World Cup appearances), DaMarcus Beasley, Cobi Jones, and Earnie Stewart (11 each).

World Cup Debut: 1990

The 1990 FIFA World Cup marked the United States’ first World Cup appearance since 1950.

Ramos immediately became a key figure for the Americans.

He started all three group-stage matches and recorded an assist on the United States’ only goal of the tournament.

While the Americans were eliminated after three losses, Ramos’ performances helped establish him as one of the country’s brightest young stars.

Following the tournament, he was named the U.S. Soccer Federation Athlete of the Year.

Breakthrough Moment: 1994

Four years later, Ramos returned as one of the leaders of the U.S. squad during a World Cup hosted on home soil.

The 1994 tournament remains one of the most important in American soccer history, and Ramos played a major role in it.

He started all four matches for the United States and delivered one of the biggest assists in program history.

Ramos assisted on the game-winning goal against Colombia, helping propel the United States out of the group stage for the first time since 1930.

Unfortunately, his tournament ended in heartbreaking fashion.

During the Round of 16 match against Brazil, Ramos suffered a skull fracture after taking an elbow from Brazilian defender Leonardo.

Final World Cup: 1998

Ramos made his third and final World Cup appearance in 1998.

Simply making the roster was an accomplishment.

The midfielder was attempting to return from back-to-back ACL tears suffered in 1996 and 1997.

As a result, his role was more limited than in previous tournaments.

Ramos played 78 total minutes during the Americans’ three group-stage matches.

Even though injuries limited his impact in France, his place in U.S. Soccer history had already been secured.

Leading up to the tournament, he also scored the United States’ lone goal in a World Cup qualifying victory over Costa Rica in 1995.

A U.S. Soccer Pioneer

When Ramos retired from international competition, he stood among the most accomplished players in American soccer history.

His three World Cup appearances were a significant achievement during an era when the United States was still building its presence on the world stage.

In 2005, Ramos was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the game’s most influential American players.

Long before he became a U.S. Soccer icon, Ramos was rewriting the record books in Raleigh.

His résumé with the Wolfpack remains one of the most decorated in program history.
