NC State’s Week 4 NFL Preseason Recap

Published

on

Last night was the beginning and the ending of Week 4 of the 2018 NFL Preseason, and it has officially come to an end. Here’s a breakdown of how all the former NC State players did.
Browns 35 Lions 17

Running Back Matt Dayes (2nd Season) has been fighting for his roster spot this preseason with the Browns. Carlos Hyde, Duke Johnson, and Nick Chubb sit ahead of him on he depth chart. Last night, Dayes made the Browns think twice about cutting him, and he made the rest of the NFL teams raise their eyebrows if they do. He rushed 8 times for 77 yards, including this 42-yard touchdown run.

Dayes also had 2 receptions for 34 yards, giving him 101 total yards on the night.

Dolphins 34 Falcons 7

Cornerback Johnathan Alston (Rookie) had 1 tackle in a reserve role last night for the Miami Dolphins. Alston is currently sitting at 5th on the depth chart, so a practice squad spot is likely in his future.

Left Guard Ted Larsen (9th Season) missed last nights action due to an injury. He suffered a leg/knee injury in practice earlier this week. The severity of the injury is unknown at this point, but he left the field in his own strength, so it doesn’t look to be serious. Larsen is currently the 2nd string Left Guard for the Dolphins.

Eagles 10 Jets 9

Cornerback Juston Burris (3rd Season) had 1 tackle and 1 interception as a starter for the Jets last night. He also had a pass breakup to go along with the INT. Heading into last night, Burris was the third string cornerback on the depth chart, and his roster spot was in question. We will have to wait and see if he did enough last night to stick around in New York.

Patriots 17 Giants 12

Right Guard Joe Thuney (3rd Season) has started every single regular season and playoff game since entering the league two years ago. As a starter, he got the night off last night.

BJ Hill (Rookie) has earned a starting job at Defensive End for the Giants in their 3-4 scheme, and as a result, he was given last night off with the rest of the starters. But during warmups, he did manage to show off his dancing skills with Odell Beckham Jr.

Colts 27 Bengals 26

Quarterback Jacoby Brissett (3rd Season) was 8 of 12 for 68 yards and a touchdown for the Colts last night. All preseason, Brissett continued to prove he’s one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL.

There was a lot of positive buzz about Running Back Nyheim Hines (Rookie) in the Colts training camp, but unfortunately the 2018 preseason hasn’t gone his way. Through 4 games, he rushed the ball 13 times for 18 yards. He also fumbled the ball 4 times, causing him to lose his punt return job. Hines didn’t rush the ball a single time last night, but they did trust him as punt returner again. He also averaged 24 yards on 3 kickoff returns. Hines is currently listed as the starter at kickoff returner, the 2nd string punt returner, and a 3rd string running back along with 3 other guys.

Baltimore 30 Redskins 20

Linebacker Jerod Fernandez (Rookie) had one tackle and 1 pass breakup in a reserve role for the Redskins. He’s currently sitting as a 4th string middle linebacker on the depth chart, so a practice squad role is likely in his future.

Jaguars 25 Bucs 10

Tight End David Grinnage (3rd Season) has played in all 4 preseason games for the Jags, but hasn’t recorded any stats. He has been on Jacksonville’s practice squad the past two year, and that’s a likely scenario again in 2018, sitting at 4th string currently.

Center Tony Adams (Rookie) got the start for the Jaguars in their final preseason game. He is currently listed as the 3rd string Center.

Right Tackle Will Richardson (Rookie) started beside his former Wolfpack comrade last night. He is currently sitting at 2nd string on the depth chart along with William Poehls.

Adams and Richardson are not a lock for a roster spot.

Steelers 39 Panthers 24

Running Back Jaylen Samuels (Rookie) had 2 rushes for 0 yards last night early in the game. Maybe his lack of playing time points to him solidifying his roster spot?

Bills 28 Bears 27

Placekicker Stephen Hauschka (11th Season) connected on his one field goal attempt (42 yards) and 1 extra point for the Bills last night.

Vikings 13 Titans 3

Safety Jack Tocho (2nd Season) didn’t play once again last night due to injury.  He has missed the past two weeks, after having a monster performance in week 1, picking up 4 tackles, 3 pass breakups and an interception. Tocho is currently listed as the 3rd string Free Safety.

Chiefs 33 Packers 21

Safety Josh Jones (2nd Season) had 2 tackles for the Packers last night, starting his first game of the preseason. Jones is a 2nd string Safety on the Packers Depth Chart.

Cornerback David Amerson (6th Season) didn’t play last night for the Chiefs, but there is no sign that he is injured. He is listed as the 2nd string Left Corner.

Broncos 21 Cardinals 10

Bradley Chubb (Rookie) has earned the starting outside linebacker spot for the Broncos on the other side of Von Miller, therefore he didn’t play last night.

Quarterback Mike Glennon (6th Season) was 8 of 10 for 68 yards and a touchdown for the Cardinals last night.

Glennon is the 3rds string quarterback behind Sam Bradford and Josh Rosen.

Linebacker Airius Moore (Rookie) did everything he could last night to try to claim a roster spot with Cardinals, recording 8 tackles in the final preseason game of 2018. He is listed as the 3rd string Middle Linebacker currently.

Chargers 23 49ers 21

Quarterback Philip Rivers (15th season) is obviously the starter for the Chargers, and didn’t play in Week 4 of the preseason.

Defensive Tackle Justin Jones (Rookie) has missed the entire preseason for the Chargers with an ankle injury. He is currently listed as a 3rd string defensive tackle.

49ers Defensive End Kentavius Street (Rookie) is still recovering from a torn ACL.

Raiders 30 Seahawks 19

Quarterback Russell Wilson (7th Season) obviously is the starter for the Seahawks, and therefore didn’t play in Week 4.

Offensive Guard JR Sweezy (6th season) went the entire preseason without playing a single snap for the Seahawks due to injury. He is listed on the depth chart as a third string right guard.

Cornerback Dontae Johnson (4th Season) started for the 2nd straight week, and recorded 4 tackles for the Seahawks. Currently he is the third string right cornerback.

Former NC State Guard Terquavion Smith earned a spot on the 2023-24 NBA G-League All-Rookie Team.

Smith averaged 22.3 points, 3.4 assists and 3 rebounds per game for the Delaware Blue Coats. What’s crazy, is that he only started in 3 of the 36 games he played in. With that being said, he averaged 30.7 minutes per game. Smith shot 35.6% from three.

As a 2-way player, Smith also played 16 games for the Philadelphia 76ers, averaging 3.3 points in 5.3 minutes per game. He shot 37.1% from three.

NC State LB Payton Wilson Visited with the Steelers Yesterday

Published

on

Former NC State Linebacker Payton Wilson had a Top-30 visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday. Wilson is the first Linebacker the Steelers have brought in.

Wilson has already had Top-30 visits with the Dallas Cowboys and the Carolina Panthers.

PFF ranks Wilson as the #1 Linebacker in the 2024 Draft, and #26 on their Big Board.

1. LB PAYTON WILSONNC STATE

PFF BIG BOARD RANK: 26

Wilson has the length, movement ability, IQ and tape of a first-round linebacker. What will likely keep him from being drafted on Day 1 is his injury history and age. If healthy, he can be a starting inside linebacker in any defense. (PFF)

Will someone take Wilson in the 1st round? Will he be a 2nd round pick? If he slips past that, that’s just stupid.

A post shared by DJ Horne (@djhorne)

Horne is trying to become the first Wolfpack player to be drafted since Dennis Smith Jr. was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks with the 6th pick in the 1st Round.

While Horne might not currently be projected to be drafted, he is trying to change that tune at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament which begins tomorrow.

Horne is a special player, and genuinely possesses the skill set to compete at the next level. Whether he is drafted, or signs a 2-way contract, what he put on tape this year warrants a chance.
