INTERVIEW: 5-star commit Jalen Lecque answers the question ‘Why NC State?’

This morning was a good one for Kevin Keatts and the Wolfpack. That’s because 2019 5-star guard Jalen Lecque committed to the Wolfpack.

Lecque is an absolute elite athlete who can do it all (especially above the rim). Here he is answering Andrew Slater‘s question of why he chose NC State. (Slater is a writer for The Athletic)

Here are the bulleted highlights from the interview:

  • Coaching staff, players and fans felt like family. Felt like home.
  • It was just the right fit.
  • Keatts talked about becoming a winner and becoming a workhorse.
  • State has the pieces for him to just come in a play right away.
  • Like the staff and was treated life family
  • Told Keatts he was coming a few days ago. Staff was really excited and full of joy.
  • Coming to NC State and going to be aggressive, strong, and a winner.
  • Wants to lead NC State to the Sweet 16, Elite 8 and eventually the championship.
  • Very aggressive player Very exciting. Loves to play the game.
  • Needs to work on basketball vision. Working on his shot and it’s gotten a lot better.
  • Wants to become a dead-eye shooter
  • Friends with Blake Harris. TD and CJ were very welcoming and wanted him there.
  • Team was hyped to hear he was coming on board.
  • Keatts wants him to have the ball in his hands. Be the next Dennis Smith but win games for him.
  • Keatts is a really good coach. Going to lead him to where he needs to go.
  • Always looked up to Dennis Smith Jr.

4-Star F Dontrez Styles: “I love everything about NC State”

4-Star Dontrez Styles showed out at the John Wall Holiday Invitational last week, averaging 20.6 points over 3 games, recording double-doubles in 2 of them (10 rebounds each). Styles earned All-Tournament team honors.

NC State has made the standout out of Kinston High School a priority, according to 247Sports’ Evan Daniels.

Which school has prioritized him?

“N.C. State,” Style said. “They contact me every day to be honest and they tell me that they need me.”

“I love everything about them,” he added when asked about them. “They are a great school. Coach [Kevin] Keatts is a great coach. I love it.” (247)

247Sports ranks Styles as the #76 player nationally in the 2021 class, and the #2 player in the state of North Carolina.

NC State Watched 4-Star C Roosevelt Wheeler Last Night

NC State Men’s Basketball coaches were in attendance last night watching 4-Star 2021 Center Roosevelt Wheeler (6’10″/220) of John Marshall High School (Richmond, VA).

NC State has made an early impression on Wheeler. After offering the standout from Virginia in August of last year, Wheeler decided to take an early Official Visit to NC State back in September.

Wheeler is ranked as the #55 overall player nationally according to Rivals, and the #9 Center. 247Sports ranks him as the #67 overall player, the #12 Center, and the #3 player in the state of Virginia.

Every single member of the NC State coaching staff has connections to the state of Virginia. Head Coach Kevin Keatts coached at Hargrave Military Academy for over a decade, and is a native of Lynchburg. Assistant Coach James Johnson is a native of Powhatan, Virginia, and coached at Longwood College, Hargrave Military Academy, George Mason and Virginia Tech, which are all in the Commonwealth. Assistant Takayo Siddle played for, and served as a coach with Keatts at Hargrave. Assistant Roy Roberson coached 20+ years in the state of Virginia.

NC State has made Wheeler a top priority in 2021.

Wheeler also holds offers from Georgetown, VCU, Wake Forest and ODU.

Keatts Watched 4-Star F Dontrez Styles This Week

NC State head coach Kevin Keatts watched 4-Star 2021 Forward Dontrez Styles (6’7″/205) on Tuesday night.

The Wolfpack offered Styles back on July 16th.

Styles is listed as a Small Forward by 247Sports, and a Power Forward by Rivals. 247Sports ranks him as the #105 overall player in the nation, the #25 Small Forward and the #2 player in the state of North Carolina. Rivals ranks him as the #78 overall player in the nation, and the #20 Power Forward.

He also holds offers from Georgetown, Maryland, Mississippi, Pittsburgh, Clemson, DePaul, St. John’s, VCU and others.

Styles plays for Kinston High School, and is thankful that Keatts was at his game.

NC State Commits Nick Farrar & Shakeel Moore Pick up 4th Star at ESPN

ESPN really likes NC State’s 2020 Men’s Basketball recruiting class, which they rank 7th nationally.

They have recently upgraded Wolfpack signees Forward Nick Farrar and Guard Shakeel Moore to 4-Star prospects, which means that ESPN now ranks ALL 5 of NC State’s signees as 4-star prospects now.

As you can see above, according to ESPN’s rankings, NC State has signed the #3, #4, #5, and #6 players in the state of North Carolina.

What you can’t see above is that ESPN also ranks Center Ebenezer Dowuona as a 4-Star prospect, and the #10 player in the state of Georgia.
