Six NC State Players On Pace to Break Single-Season School Records

Published

on

We are 5 games into 2019 College Football season, and a couple of Wolfpack players are on pace to either break an NC State single-season record, or rank in the Top-10.

Redshirt Sophomore Punter Trent Gill was a walk-on who received a scholarship before the start of the season, beating out Mackenzie Morgan for the job. Gill had big shoes to fill, stepping in after A.J. Cole who was a 4-year starter, and the starting punter for the Oakland Raiders currently. The shoes fit quite well through 5 games, averaging 47.2 yards per punt, which is a whole yard greater than the single-season record held by Johnny Evans.

Sophomore Place Kicker Chris Dunn is on pace to break his own record he set last year as a Freshman. Last season, Dunn made 23 field goals, beating the single-season record by 3 field goals. Dunn has made 10 field goals through 5 games, and is on pace to kick 24 by the end of the regular season.

Redshirt Senior Defensive Tackle Larrell Murchison has 5 sacks through 5 games, and is on pace to finish the regular season with 12, which would rank 2nd all-time in school history for sacks in a single season.

He also has 6.5 tackles for loss through 5 games, and is on pace to finish with 16.5 by the end of the regular season, which would tie for the 10th most in school history in a single season. If the Wolfpack makes a bowl, he will be on pace to pass Dantonio Burnette in 9th place.

Redshirt Sophomore Wide Receiver Thayer Thomas is averaging 14.6 yards per punt return, which would rank 7th.

Junior Wide Receiver Emeka Emezie currently has 28 receptions, and is on pace to finish the regular season with 67, which would tie Jerricho Cotchery (2002) for the 8th most receptions in a single season. If the Wolfpack goes to a bowl, Emezie is on pace to finish with 72 receptions, which would rank 6th.

Freshman Running Back Jordan Houston is averaging 7.1 yards per carry. If he were to keep up that number, he would tie Dick Christy for the highest yards per carry average in school history.

NC State Offers FCS DT Brandon Lane

NC State offered Stephen F. Austin (FCS) Transfer Defensive Tackle Brandon Lane (6’3″/300) yesterday.

Lane started in 6 of the 11 games he played in for Stephen F. Austin this past season. He finished the year with 44 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. His PFF Grade was 74.6, which ranked 4th on the Lumberjacks Defense. His 79.9 Run Defense Grade ranked 3rd on the team. In 2022, Lane played 7 games as a reserve for Stephen F. Austin, recording 11 tackles 2.5 tackles for loss and 1 sack.

Lane spent his first two collegiate seasons at South Dakota State (2000-21). In 2000, he played in 1 game. In 2021, he played in 3 games as a reserve for the Jackrabbits. The 2000 season was the Covid Year, and the 2021 season was his redshirt year. As a result, Lane still has two years of eligibility remaining.

Around a week-and-a-half ago, Lane committed to Michigan St., but then he decommitted from the Spartans on May 2nd.

I don’t think Michigan St. is necessarily off the table, and he has visited Washington and West Virginia.
