UPDATED: Vonwolf Sold his Soul for NC State Baseball and Now We’re Here…

Published

on

It’s been a wild month of State baseball. We at PI, are happy to extend Vonwolf’s contract because of, you know, selling his soul. Also he writes okay stuff. Please enjoy the following with updates from an article posted on 5/21.

The Deal

It’s late March and Old Tuffy cans are falling faster than a Duke Point Guard on an opponent’s drive. State basketball had gotten my hopes up WAY too high and now a baseball team, I thought had the tools, was failing miserably and at the very bottom of the ACC standings.

I did want any other drunk, State-obsessed fan would do. I made a deal with the devil himself…

Devil: “You want what?”
Me: “I need this friggin’ *hiccup* baseketball team *hiccup* to win.”
Devil: “First off, what sport? And a series? A championship? What we thinking here?”
Me: “Baseball…like…wins everything *hiccup* and I can enjoy seeing them come back from the dead.”

True story folks.

Wait, you don’t believe me?

Well then Explain…

Then explain the team ERA going from 10.5 to 5. In starts since June 25th, Johnson, Highfill, Villaman and Willadsen have allowed State to go 11-1, while striking out 86 batters. In Johnson’s outing last night, he had a career high 13K’s in 6.2 innings.
(And they’ve only gotten better. Other than the hiccup in Game 1 versus Arkansas, they’ve been dominate. Sam Highfill has lead the charge, winning must wins against Georgia Tech (ACCT), LA Tech, Arkansas and Vanderbilt (NCAAT). Just insane performances all around.)

Also explain to me how Jonny Butler is the second coming of Ted Williams? He has power, massive hitting streak with a PERFECT fielding percentage. In his last 11 games, 27 hits (.550 batting average), 8 dingers and 19 RBI’s. Also a little fun fact, he’s also 12-12 on stolen base attempts.
(Heeerrrrreeeeee’sssss JONNY!!! Since this article’s release, Butler has earned First Team Atlantic All-Region, All-American honors from NCBWA and Baseball America, and clowned a fan wearing a ‘Jonny Butler Sucks’ shirt.)

While you’re at it, explain the fact that each and every game, someone goes off at the plate. From the aforementioned Butler, to McDonough’s hot streak, to Tresh going off against Florida State on Thursday night. Tresh’s first home run was just a feel good game starter. His second? My Lawddddd…Yelled so loud the dogs won’t come within ten feet of me and the wife only has hearing in one ear.
(Like seriously…Brown goes off to win Regional MVP…Torres gets dingers in each Arkansas game…Murr’s glove has been ridiculous (Gold Glove ridiculous)…Each game is a different guy stepping up. Absolute insanity.)

The Road Ahead

Avent and the boys don’t need anymore added pressure, but I’d sure like to keep this streak going to know I wasn’t hoodwinkled into thinking this whole thing was going to come true. They’ve positioned themselves that there is a 95% chance they finish top-5 in ACC regular season standings and a really, really good chance they’re top-3. Regardless, they are far ahead of where we all thought they’d be when I made that decision in March.
(Look…they made it to the ACC Championships and who did they face? That’s right THE F*CKING DEVIL’S OWN TEAM!!! I should have known that slippery SOB would pull something on me, but at least there are no longer any devils or gyro balls remaining. So sorry WPN that I didn’t even thinking about Duke being in play for the Ship…Literally my only slip up on this transaction.)

I’m not asking to be called a hero, although that’d be cool. Also, not looking for any monetary gain, DM if you need my Venmo. I’m just so freaking excited to have an ULTRA fun baseball team to watch and CANNOT wait to get one more win and then roll the dice in the ACCT and NCAAT.
(We keep winning. In a span of about three weeks, State has beat; the #1 team in the country, the reigning National Champion, the College Player of the Year, the SEC Player of the Year, the PAC-12 Pitcher of the Year and the #5 pick in this year’s draft. Unreal. There is still work to be done, but enjoy this CWS Final Four berth. Also, still don’t need to be called a hero…but also, that’d be cool. #GoPack.)

NC State is Solidly Back in the Top-25 After Series Victory Over Rival UNC

Published

on

NC State’s Baseball team is solidly back in the Top-25 after winning a series over rival UNC this past weekend, winning 2 of 3 at home. Last week, the Wolfpack were ranked 22nd in the Baseball America poll, but in none of the others.

NC State will play a midweek game at East Carolina tomorrow night on the road, and the Pirates rank 7th in the D1Baseball and Coaches Poll.

NC State Wins Series, but Loses Finale to #11 UNC 14-3

Published

on

NC State won the first two games of the series, clinching their first series victory over rival #11 UNC since 2021, and the first one at home since 2016. The Wolfpack weren’t able to pull of the sweep this afternoon, losing the finale to the Tar Heels 3-14.

The NC State pitching staff didn’t have an answer for the UNC bats today. Starter Freshman Cooper Consiglio gave up 6 runs (5 earned) in 3.1 innings, striking out 4, and walking 4. The Wolfpack put 5 pitchers on the mound today, and every single one of them gave up runs. Sophomore Andrew Shaffner and Freshman Camden Wimbish both gave up 3 runs apiece.

Junior Jacob Cozart was the only bright spot in the Wolfpack’s offense today, hitting 2 solo Home Runs, marking only the 2nd time in his career that he has hit 2+ Home Runs in a single game.

The Wolfpack have two Top-10 series wins (Duke #9 and Clemson #2), and now another Top-15 series win (UNC #11).

Things don’t get any easier this Tuesday, playing #9 ECU on the road at 6pm. NC State should be ranked when they play the Pirates this week.

NC State has Dominated UNC in Athletics in 2023-24

Published

on

After NC State clinched a series victory over UNC last night in Baseball, I thought it would be a good time to relish in how the Wolfpack has dominated the Tar Heels Athletic Program as a whole in 2023-24.

The Wolfpack Baseball team has won the first two games in the series against the Tar Heels, clinching a series victory over UNC for the first time since 2021. It marks the first time NC State has won a series against the Tar Heels in Raleigh since 2016.

NC State defeated UNC in Volleyball 3-1, winning in Chapel Hill for the first time in 25 years. The Tar Heels had won the last 5 matches against the Wolfpack.

The Wolfpack defeated the Tar Heels 39-20 in Football in Carter-Finley Stadium. It marked the 3rd consecutive win over UNC.

NC State lost both regular season games to UNC in Men’s Basketball, but when it mattered most, the Wolfpack defeated the Tar Heels in the ACC Championship Game 84-76, winning their first title since 1987.

The Wolfpack Women’s Basketball team lost to their rival in Chapel Hill, but defeated UNC 63-59 in Reynolds Coliseum. NC State has won 5 of the last 7 against UNC.

In Gymnastics, NC State defeated UNC 196.725-194.925 in Raleigh. This marked the 3rd straight victory for the Wolfpack over the Tar Heels.

NC State’s Men & Women’s Swimming & Diving teams both beat UNC. The Men won 258-93, and the Women won 196-157.

The Wolfpack Wrestling team defeated UNC 33-6 in Reynolds Coliseum. NC State has won 11 straight Duals against the Tar Heels.

The NC State Men’s Tennis team defeated UNC 4-0, winning against their rival in back-to-back years.

The Wolfpack Women’s Tennis team has defeated the Tar Heels 4-3 on two occasions thus far this season, and will face their rival again today.

The Cross Country teams didn’t have individual meets against UNC, but the Women obviously beat them, because they won the ACC Championship. The Men didn’t, finishing 8th in the Conference, with the Tar Heels finishing 1st.

The only other NC State athletic team that didn’t taste victory against UNC this year was the Women’s Soccer team, losing 0-4 in Raleigh.

Of course, each of these NC State athletic teams has much higher goals than just beating their rival, but there’s no denying how sweet it is to beat the Tar Heels.
