NC State Men’s Basketball released their 2nd episode of Around Raleigh With Coach Wade today. Coach Wade sat down with Guard Terrance Arceneaux, who transferred to NC State this offseason from Houston. You can read the transcript below, and watch the video underneath.
WW: Hey, this is Coach Will Wade from NC State Basketball. I’m here with Terrance Arceneaux. We’re in historic Reynolds Coliseum. Excited to be here. Can’t wait to play a game here in December as well, but want to let the Pack fans get to know Terrance a little bit better and we’re going to talk a little bit today about his journey to NC State, both basketball and off the court.
Talk about your upbringing in Beaumont and how it’s kind of helped you as a player, and molded you as a player.
TA: Oh yeah, for sure. I owe Beaumont a lot of credit. Small place, so when you grew up with some people, you knew them until you graduate.
So I owe it to my guys, my friends that I grew up with and who I started playing basketball with, keeping us locked in and focused and just wanting to make it out of Beaumont for sure. I mean, Beaumont is a great place, but with me and my friends, the goal was always to make it out and be able to go play college basketball somewhere.
WW: So talk about how it was in high school, how it was playing at Beaumont United and particularly I want to hear about what was going through your mind when you hit the big three to win the state title.
TA: Playing for Beaumont United was great. We had a great team. I think four out of the five maybe went D1, so we had a high competitive team and we were able to go undefeated one year, like you say, the year I hit the shot. That was a great year. We bounced back from COVID and it was something that Beaumont kind of needed. So we were able to go out there and play at a high level and compete. It came down to the wire with them shots. A lot of people asked me what was going through my mind during that time. I tell them, ‘Man, I kind of just was in a flow state.’ I can’t even remember really. Everything was kind of just blank and fuzzy. It was a great time, but I knew I had to take that shot there. I just knew I had to take it there.
WW: Let’s get you back in that flow state for some game winning shots for the Pack. Just talk a little bit about the transition from Beaumont into college basketball in the Big 12 at Houston.
TA: It was different. Something that I never experienced before. It’s a great program, great coaching staff, difficult going there, difficult for the newer guys. That Freshman year was kind of just up-and-down for me, but it definitely was a good year and I learned and I grew a lot.
WW: Obviously, you had high expectations going into your Sophomore year and then the Achilles injury happened. So, just talk about the Achilles injury, recovering from the Achilles injury and then bouncing back this year to play in 40 games, play in the national championship game. Just talk about in general the Achilles injury, recovering from that and how it made you a little bit stronger this year and a little bit more hungry this year.
TA: I felt like I was just making progress and just getting to where I was headed and it just happened to end shortly. So, coming back from that, my main goal was just kind of to prove everybody that I can. A lot of people may have doubted me, and when I did come back and they saw how I was playing, a lot of people were like, ‘Wow, that’s amazing,’ especially how early I was able to come back and make an impact. I had a lot of great games early on and was able to make that transition from not playing for a year, to finally getting back out there pretty smooth. It was a great thing, and I had God on my side, family on my side and I just stayed strong and kept my head down and was working.
WW: What led you here to NC State and to running with the Pack?
TA: It was a tough choice for me, but I knew that I needed to move on and get that fresh start, being able to know that I had people that believe in me. When I went into the Portal, I didn’t know it was going to be that hectic, really. Honestly, I didn’t know where I was.
WW: If you’re a good player, of course, it’s going to be hectic.
TA: It was a surprise to me, but I mean, it was just the signs, and I knew that I made the right choice pretty early. I’m confident in this, I believe in it and I’m just glad you were able to believe in me.
WW: Well, we’re appreciative that you came and I do want to hit on one last thing. Talk a little bit about your family and Byron, your older brother and how that’s kind of made you who you are.
TA: My mom, she’s from Lake Charles, Louisiana. A lot of people don’t know that my dad was also out there. He was kind of back-and-forth from Beaumont, but he moved out there later on in his years. We’ve got that Louisiana side to us, and the Beaumont side, even though we’re real close to each other. I like to split it in half. I say 50-50.
Like you said, he grew up, he was a basketball player at first. I was definitely a football player. I definitely didn’t start playing basketball until I wanted to beat him. He made it very competitive for me, and I owe him a lot as well, because without him, I don’t think I would be playing basketball. No telling where I’d be. So I owe a lot of credit to him, watching him, how he worked and what he did out there on the court. We love each other. We support each other. We are always there for each other. We’re always talking on the phone every night, especially with my mom. We love each other. We’re always there for each other.
WW: We’re excited to have you, man, and really, really pleased that you chose us. I think our fans are going to enjoy watching Terrance play. He’s obviously a tremendous defender. He showed that at Houston, but he’s got a lot of offensive pop as well. He’s got an offensive arsenal that we’re going to unleash this year and we’re very, very excited.
