Redshirt senior EDGE Sabastian Harsh transferred to NC State this offseason from Wyoming, and he’s looking to bring versatility to the Wolfpack defense in 2025.
“I feel like Coach has been sliding me around in different looks, different spots—whether that be a peso or a nickel. Sliding out to a backer, getting in coverage, rushing the passer, or sliding to a 4i–3 technique,” Harsh told the media after practice today. “Just being able to be versatile, be usable at whatever spot I need to be.”
As a former walk-on at Wyoming who earned a scholarship in his second year, Harsh has shown a willingness to do anything and everything to get on the field and help his team.
“If Coach tells me to get in there and take on a double team, I’m going to get in there and take on a double team,” Harsh said. “If he tells me to go cover someone on the perimeter, I’m going to go do that too.”
According to Harsh, he arrived in Raleigh weighing 240 pounds and has since added 22 pounds of lean mass. Not only does he feel strong enough to hold the edge in a four-man—or even a three-man—front, but he also feels faster than before he arrived.
“Yeah, so I came in, I was weighing around 240. At the time, I knew I needed to gain some weight. So just talking with Thunder, getting a plan right when I came in—I’ve been able to put on like 22 pounds,” Harsh said. “Just being able to gain as much lean mass as I can, making sure that my body is able to handle playing 4i, playing on the edge, even sliding into a three sometimes. Just being ready for ACC football, what it takes. I feel faster, I feel stronger. I can feel it now—it feels a little bit easier.”
Harsh began his career in Laramie as a walk-on and did not see the field in 2020 (a year that didn’t count toward eligibility due to COVID-19). After a strong spring heading into his second year, he was awarded a scholarship. In 2021, he played in 13 games on special teams. Harsh missed the entire 2022 season due to injury. After not seeing the field in two of his first three seasons—and not playing from the line of scrimmage during that time—he finally carved out a role in 2023, starting 7 of 12 games and recording 50 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks. He led the team in tackles for loss and earned Third-Team All-Mountain West honors from Phil Steele.
This past season, Harsh solidified himself as a starter for the Cowboys but missed four games due to injury. He still finished with 40 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks—ranking second on the team in tackles for loss despite the missed time—and earned All-Mountain West Honorable Mention recognition.
