Ty Head’s outstanding sophomore season has earned him a place among the greatest MLB Draft selections in NC State baseball history.
The Wolfpack center fielder was selected by the Baltimore Orioles with the 46th overall pick in the second round of the 2026 MLB Draft, making him the 12th-highest drafted player in program history.
It’s another milestone in what was one of the most complete individual seasons in recent Wolfpack history.
Highest Draft Picks in NC State History
Head now joins an impressive list of Wolfpack greats selected ahead of him.
3rd: P Carlos Rodon (2014)
13th: SS Trea Turner (2014)
13th: C Patrick Bailey (2020)
15th: SS Will Wilson (2019)
26th: P Dan Plesac (1983)
27th: P Joey Devine (2005)
30th: OF Chuckie Canady (1981)

32nd: P Corey Lee (1996)
43rd: 1B Louie Meadows (1982)
46th: OF Ty Head (2026)
The company Head now keeps is remarkable.
Three of the players drafted ahead of him, Carlos Rodón, Trea Turner, and Dan Plesac, have gone on to earn MLB All-Star honors, while Patrick Bailey has already won two Gold Gloves behind the plate.
Already One of Baltimore’s Top Prospects
Head wasted little time earning national recognition after the draft.
Eric Cross of RotoBaller immediately ranked him among the Top 10 prospects in the Orioles’ farm system.
MLB Pipeline senior writer Jim Callis was equally complimentary when discussing Head’s upside.
“Elite BB%, elite K%. Doesn’t chase, doesn’t swing and miss. Plus runner, really good CF… some people were saying best defensive center fielder in the draft. And he has 20/20 upside.”
It’s easy to see why scouts are so intrigued.
Head combines elite plate discipline, premium defensive value, speed, and emerging power, a rare combination that projects well at the professional level.
Gold Glove Defense, All-ACC Production
Head’s glove may have drawn national attention first, but his offensive game took a major leap forward in 2026.
He earned Second Team All-ACC honors while also taking home a national Gold Glove Award.
2026 Statistics

Stolen Bases: 26 (1st)
Head finished first on the team in home runs, runs scored, walks, and stolen bases, while developing into one of the ACC’s most complete players.
Record-Setting Patience
Perhaps the most underrated part of Head’s game was his approach at the plate.
His 57 walks not only led NC State and ranked second in the ACC, but also rank second in program history for a single season.
Once he reached base, he consistently turned singles into doubles.
His 26 stolen bases are tied for the fifth-most in a season in NC State history.
That combination of patience, speed, and power is exactly why professional scouts viewed him as one of the safest position players in the draft.
Final Thoughts
Ty Head arrived in Raleigh with a reputation as an elite defender.
He leaves as much more than that.
A Gold Glove-winning center fielder, an All-ACC performer, one of the nation’s most disciplined hitters, and now the 12th-highest draft pick in NC State baseball history.
If Jim Callis’ projection of a future 20-home run, 20-stolen base player becomes reality, the Orioles may have landed one of the steals of the second round.
