CBBAnalytics.com has released its first scatter plot of the season.

This chart shows where NCAA teams rank in both adjusted offensive rating and adjusted defensive rating.

As you can see, NC State is looking real good. They are dominating in adjusted offnensive rating and above average in adjusted defensive rating.

Confused, or want a clearer definition of what we’re measuring here. We’ve got some definitions for you…

Adjusted Offensive Rating (AdjO) measures points scored per 100 possessions, adjusted for the quality of opposing defenses faced and other factors like pace and game location. A rating of 120 means a team scores roughly 120 points per 100 possessions against an average D-I defense. Top offenses this season are in the 125–140 range (far right), while poor offenses are below 100.

Adjusted Defensive Rating (AdjD) measures points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for the quality of opposing offenses and the same factors. Because lower is better, the y-axis is inverted (70 at the top, 140 at the bottom). A rating of 90 means a team allows 90 points per 100 possessions against an average D-I offense. The best defenses are in the 80–95 range (top of the chart), while the worst are 125+ (bottom). Elite two-way teams live in the top-right corner (high AdjO, low AdjD), which is why that area is the most sparsely populated.
