NC State Football’s Future Non-Conference Opponents After the Cancellation of the Georgia Series

NC State and Georgia were scheduled to play a home-and-home football series, but news broke yesterday that it had been canceled.

The ACC announced in September that it was moving from an 8-game conference slate to a 9-game conference slate, while also requiring schools to schedule one of their non-conference games against a Power 4 team. Most teams will be held to this standard in 2026, but some will still only play eight conference games next season. Certain teams that have annual rivalry games against Power 4 opponents (like FSU–Florida) will be given a year to adjust their future non-conference schedules to align with the ACC’s new 9-game format.

Since the ACC has 17 teams, one school will annually play eight conference games but still be required to play two Power 4 non-conference opponents that year.

Some schools have upcoming seasons in which they already have four non-conference games scheduled, which means they will have to cancel one of them (unless it falls during their 8-game conference year).

As a result, all 17 ACC schools will have to fully abide by the scheduling rules by 2027.
