NC State head coach Will Wade confirmed that NC State will unveil new black uniforms on Saturday at Pitt.

According to Wade, who leaked the news on his radio show yesterday, explained that the jerseys were being worn because Pitt was wearing alternate colors, and that they featured the Tuffy logo on the front.

NC State has a history of wearing black that dates back to (we believe) the 1999-2000 season that featured Damien Wilkins, Justin Gainey and Damon Thornton.

There have been versions of this jersey throughout the years as you can see below.

Football has also leaned into black in recent years. With the latest example being these jerseys we wore on the road at Georgia Tech in 2024.

I couldn’t remember a game we wore black this season, and according to our favorite uniform tracking account on X, there wasn’t one.

So it’s anyone’s best guess what this kit might draw inspiration from, but either way, we’re looking forward to seeing it.

Here are some (not all) of the teams that rocked black jerseys in the past.

Louisville “Blackout” Game (2016)

  • In the 2015–16 season, NC State wore their black alternate jerseys during a blackout-themed game against Louisville at PNC Arena in early January 2016. This was promoted as a “Pack in Black” night with fans encouraged to wear black too. #16 beat NC State 77-74 in Raleigh.

Legends Classic vs. LSU (2015)

  • NC State earned a hard-fought 83-72 overtime victory over LSU in the consolation game of the Legends Classic in Brooklyn, NY. Heralded LSU Freshman Ben Simmons was held to 4 points, but contributed 16 rebounds and 10 assists. Four of the Pack’s five starters scored in double figures, with Anthony “Cat” Barber adding 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists.

NC State @ Duke – Feb 16, 2012

  • NC State wore black uniforms in that road game at Cameron Indoor Stadium, but things didn’t go so great. They were up 20, but lost by 5, 78-73 as Seth Curry went off in the 2nd half.
