NC State will look to extend its ACC winning streak to six games when the Wolfpack host Virginia Tech at Noon in a sold-out Lenovo Center on Saturday.

Four of the five wins in the current streak have come on the road, including an overtime victory at No. 18 Clemson, making the run even more impressive. Before looking ahead, a quick history lesson helps put this moment into perspective.

The last time NC State won five straight ACC regular season games came during the 2020-21 season, when the Wolfpack closed the regular season with five consecutive wins heading into the ACC Tournament. Four of those five victories were on the road, including a win at No. 15 Virginia.

Before that, you have to go back to 2003-04, when NC State put together a five-game ACC winning streak that included ranked home wins over No. 16 Wake Forest and No. 1 Duke.

To find the next instance, you have to rewind to the 1987-88 season, when the Wolfpack closed the regular season with five straight conference wins, highlighted by a victory over No. 5 Duke.

So when was the last time NC State won six straight ACC regular season games?

Fifty-two years ago.

During the 1973-74 season, NC State went 12-0 in ACC play, following up a perfect 12-0 conference record from the year before.

Other Notable ACC Regular Season Winning Streaks

  • 1964-65: 6 games
  • 1961-62: 7 games
  • 1958-59: 5 games and 7 games
  • 1957-58: 5 games
  • 1956-57: 5 games
  • 1955-56: 5 games and 5 games
  • 1954-55: 5 games and 7 games

Putting It All Together

This is the 73rd season of ACC basketball, and NC State is an original member of the conference. Across that history, the Wolfpack have recorded:

  • 16 five-game ACC winning streaks
  • 6 six-game ACC winning streaks
  • 5 seven-game ACC winning streaks
  • 2 twelve-game ACC winning streaks

So no, Wolfpack fans shouldn’t take this run for granted.

If NC State wins tomorrow, it would mark just the seventh time ever the program has posted a six-game ACC regular season winning streak.

Let that sink in.
