(An update from the earlier article that had us with 12 QUAD 1/2 wins —>NC State lost a Quad 2 win this morning when Liberty dropped to 79th in the NET)
While everyone was busy stressing in late January about NC State not having a premier Quad 1 win, they were busy stacking Quad 2 victories.
Then they beat Clemson on the road in OT. Then they beat Wake on the road, and turned around and did the same to SMU.
Suddenly, NC State has 3 Quad 1 wins. But what people have been ignoring is just how good they have been against Quad 2 teams.
NC State is 8-1 vs. Quad 2 teams.
When it comes time for the selection committee to look at these records and to see who gets NCCA Tournament At-Large bids, both Quad 1 and Quad 2 wins will matter. This is where NC State will shine.
With the win over Virginia Tech, NC State moves into an elite class. VT is a Quad 2 win (#57 / home). That gives NC State 12 Q1/2 wins, tying them with 3 other elite teams in 4th place
1st Place = Michigan with 15
2nd Place = Iowa State 14
3rd Place TIE = Arizona, Duke, UConn with 13
4th Place Tie = Houston and Kansas with 12
5th Place Tie = NC State, Nebraska, Florida, Illinois, Vanderbilt, Alabama, with 11
The only ACC school ahead of the Pack is Duke.
Just a reminder that NET focuses mainly on wins, and only dings you for losses if it’s Quad 3 or lower, which is great news for NC State. These wins don’t go away unless a team drops out of the Quad 2 tier. Right now, none of NC State’s Quad 2 wins are on the verge of dropping out.
Meanwhile, NC State’s remaining schedule is all Quad 1 & 2 games.
@Louisville – Quad 1
Miami – Quad 2
UNC – Quad 1
@Virginia – Quad 1
@Notre Dame – Quad 2
Duke – Quad 1
Stanford – Quad 2
I know we still have a lot of basketball left to play, but if you had told me prior to the season that NC State would be 18-6, 9-2 in the ACC, with 11 Q 1/2 wins in early February, I would have told you that you’d be in the midst of a ‘Red Reckoning.’
