Oh my. I wasn’t expecting that headline.

After getting imaging done after the Miami game, it seemed as if UNC dodged a bullet. Caleb Wilson didn’t have a fracture and was listed as having a sprained wrist.

But around 3PM today, news dropped that Wilson actually has a fractured hand.

This is horrible news for UNC, and you don’t want to wish an injury on anyone (especially a kid with such a bright future), but it’s likely they will be without him for the NC State game, and that’s going to increase NC State’s odds in this one.

Wilson was pretty much their whole team. He led the team in multiple categories, including points per game (19), rebounds (9.4), steals (1.5) and blocks (1.4).

From NC State’s perspective, this would take a huge mismatch off the board. While NC State and UNC are nearly identical when it comes to the advanced analytics, this Wilson matchup was going to be something NC State didn’t really have an answer for.

As of now, there is no word on when Wilson will return or if he will return at all.

Remember, it’s not 2005 anymore, kids aren’t going to just tape it up and play for the love the school. This is the NIL era. Wilson has a shot to be the Top-5 overall pick in the NBA draft, but workouts will start in early May and 8 weeks to heal a broken bone brings him to mid-April.

It’s hard to believe he’d risk playing, but hey, you never know.
