The No. 13 NC State Wolfpack held on for a thrilling 6-4 victory over No. 16 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, in what will go down as their first signiture win of the season.

This midweek showdown between the two ranked teams lived up to the billing as a tough early-season test, with NC State improving to 11-1 while Coastal Carolina fell to 7-5.

Coastal Carolina struck first in the top of the 1st inning, as Blagen Pado launched a two-run home run to deep left field off NC State starter Heath Andrews, giving the Chanticleers an early 2-0 lead (with an RBI sacrifice fly element noted in the scoring).

The Wolfpack answered immediately in the bottom half. Chris McHugh crushed a solo home run to deep left field (370 feet), his 5th of the season, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The game settled into a pitcher’s duel through the middle innings. Coastal added a single run in the top of the 5th on a Blake Barthol RBI single to right, scoring Ty Barrango from second while Dean Mihos advanced to third (2-1 CCU).

NC State erupted in the bottom of the 7th to take control. Luke Nixon doubled to right for an RBI, scoring Chris McHugh from first and advancing to third on the throw. Then Bryden Fraasman followed with a two-RBI double to right-center, plating Nixon and Sherman Johnson from second for a 4-3 lead.

Coastal fought back in the top of the 8th. Dean Mihos homered to deep left for a solo shot, tying the game at 4-4. But the Wolfpack responded right away in the bottom of the 8th. Chris McHugh went yard again—this time a two-run homer to deep left (374 feet), his 6th of the year—scoring Drew Lanphere from first to reclaim the lead at 6-4.

Collins Black who had pitched the 8th, got the win and locked it down in the 9th to give NC State the win.

Chris McHugh was the star for NC State, going 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored, 3 RBI, and two home runs—driving the offense with power.

Luke Nixon added 3 hits, including a key double.

Bryden Fraasman had 3 hits and 2 RBI.

Heath Andrews earned a quality start (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R/ER, 4 K) before the bullpen took over.

NC State outhit Coastal 12-7, with no errors on either side. The Wolfpack’s timely hitting and late-inning surge proved decisive in this hard-fought battle.

NC State is back at home tomorrow vs. Queens before opening up a 3-game set vs Lafayette this weekend.
