Diamond in the Rough? Gainey surprises everyone, offering unranked 6’10 F Jamil Robinson

NC State has offered Jamil Robinson, a 6’10 forward from the 2027 class.

Now, you’re probably wondering why we titled this article the way we did. Why would a 6’10 kid getting an offer be a surprise, or how could you consider him a diamond in the rough with that height?

Well, Robinson doesn’t seem to have a verified 247, Rivals, or ESPN profile page. He doesn’t have a star ranking and he’s only been offered by lower tier schools like College of Charleston, Georgia Southern, Omaha, Tennessee Tech and West Georgia.

But look at his tape and you’ll see a big, decently athletic lefty with decent touch, good balance and nice footwork.

So what gives?

Well, Robinson is somewhat of an unknown because he had a pretty untimely injury, breaking his foot right before a junior season that he was hoping would catapult him into the national scene and have high-major coaches calling.

The Georgia native was 6’6 as a freshman and wasn’t on many radars, but a growth spurt during his sophomore season and into his lost junior campaign changed things.

Now at 6’10, Robinson is making some noise. He played the last few games of his junior season, but was just getting his feet under him. It’s been his play this summer that caught Gainey’s attention and notched him his first high-major offer.

Here is what one scouting service said about his play at the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association LIVE! event this summer:

Jamil Robinson dominated the interior at the GBCA Live Event, making his presence felt on both ends of the floor. He consistently controlled the glass, using his size, strength, and physicality to create second-chance scoring opportunities for ELCA. Defensively, Robinson anchored the paint as a legitimate rim protector, altering countless shots and blocking attempts at the basket. His ability to impact the game without needing plays called for him makes him a valuable frontcourt prospect

What you’re looking at here is Gainey and his staff trusting their eyes instead of the scouting services. If NC State isn’t going to be the richest school (in terms of NIL) they’re going to have to find talent and work on that relationship before it blows up. That’s what we seem to be seeing here with Robinson.
