Back in March Bradley Chubb was practicing at the Linebacker position, where he played all of last season as a true Freshman. By the time Spring scrimmages rolled around, Chubb had been moved to Defensive End. This wasn’t a foreign position for Chubb, because he played defensive end at Hillgrove High School (Powder Springs, Georgia), and was a 3-star prospect at the position. But after spending a whole entire season at Linebacker, going back to having your hands on the ground is a big adjustment. After practice yesterday, he said the biggest adjustment has been his eyes.
“My eye control. Because when you’re a linebacker you’re standing up and you can see everything,” said Chubb. “When you’re hands are on the ground you’re looking at the offensive tackle, and you have to keep picking your head up. Getting back used to that was a little hard.”
Chubb was listed as the starting defensive end on the other side of Senior Mike Rose on the Spring Game’s depth chart, and back in the Spring NC State head coach Dave Doeren said that he had been the biggest surprise of the defensive line in Spring practice.
You need a little bit more weight on your frame when your playing on the line, and Chubb said he’s put on a little bit since the move.
“Since moving from Linebacker, I’ve put on 5-10 pounds, and I’m at 260 pounds right now.” said Chubb
Chubb said that the he thinks he will be prepared to face the competition this year because he goes against a solid Wolfpack Offensive Line each and every day.
“I get to go against good guys like Joe Thuney and Tyler Jones, who are supposed to be pretty good this year,” said Chubb. “Alex Barr has experience. Tony Adams and the rest of the guys. Going against good competition everyday just makes you better.”
On the other side of the coin, Chubb feels like the Offensive Line should be getting really good, because he feels like they are going against one of the best Defensive Lines in the ACC each and every day.
“They are going against guys like me, Mike Rose, Kentavius Street, and B.J. Hill, and I feel like we are one of the best defensive lines in the ACC,” said Chubb. “Going against us everyday is definitely going to make them better.”
The Wolfpack Defensive Line is young, featuring three starters who are true sophomores in Kentavius Street, B.J. Hill, and Bradley Chubb. Justin Jones and DeShaywn Middleton are also on the three-deep depth chart on the defensive line, and they were a part of the same recruiting class. Chubb says that this class of defensive linemen is extremely close.
“Me, Street, DeShaywn, and Justin were roommates the first year. We’re really close,” said Chubb. “I’ll go to those guys for anything. And they would say the same for me. And B.J. was right down down the hall. Since we were roommates, we would go over plays together all the time.”
Chubb said he’s still trying to figure out his personal goals for the season, but the team is excited that they won 8 games last season, but they aren’t settling for that. They want to keep improving, and he said the number they are chasing is the number 10.
