4-star Linebacker Payton Wilson (6’5″/225) has officially signed his letter of intent.
Wilson (Orange/Hillsborough, NC) was the 20th member of NC State’s 2018 football recruiting class, committing to run with the Wolfpack on December 1st.
Wilson originally was a UNC commit, but NC State was able to flip him. An official visit to Notre Dame sparked his interest, but at the end of the day he wanted to play for the Wolfpack, and stay close to home.
“Coach Hux and Coach Doeren, honestly, they are great people and I love them more as coaches,” he said. “I feel like they can develop me to be the best person I can be for college or, hopefully, the next level. I do really fit in well with the school and the people. I feel like I fit in well with the players too.”
“It’s the best you’re going to get on the east coast,” he said. “They pack the stadium if they are playing a D-II school or if they’re playing Clemson. The atmosphere is insane. NC State is known for their run defense and I really love that.” (Rivals)
247Sports ranks Wilson as the #29 overall player in the nation. ESPN ranks him as the #2 outside linebacker, and the #3 player in the state of North Carolina. As far as I can tell, Wilson is the highest ranked NC State commit since Andre Brown in 2005 (#13).
Wilson is a U.S. Army All-American, and was nominated for the U.S. Army National Player of the Year Award (16 nominees).
In 8 games this year (before tearing his ACL), Wilson had 103 tackles, including 21 for loss and 10 sacks, a pick-six, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery.
