I mean could things get any better for Sam Highfill and Chris Villaman? (The answer is definitely yes, but just play along and don’t jinx this). Both pitchers were named to Baseball USA’s Collegiate Team.
Sam Highfill has had one of the most underrated seasons, not only for State but the ACC. His 9-2 record with a 3.66 ERA leads the Wolfpack, but his play of late has been a catapult for this crew. Must win wins against Georgia Tech in the ACCT, LA Tech (Regionals), Arkansas (Super Regionals) and most recently a 2-hitter against Vanderbilt at the CWS. Also, might be the greatest hitter of our generation. The potential he’s shown as a freshman, is unquestionable.
Chris Villaman has also had a fantastic year, as part of the two-headed monster with Willadsen. Through 18 appearances, Villaman is 5-2 with a better than 4 to 1 strike out to walks ratio. Villaman has become almost a “do it all guy” for Avent, as he has the heat to pitch as a reliever and the strength to eat up innings.
The manager for this team? None other than Mr. Elliott Avent. As with State’s trio of women’s basketball players on Team USA, we’ll keep you up to date when the guys hit the field in July.
