Here is what NC State’s starting 5 would look like based on ‘Offensive Rating’

Before we jump in here, some of you may not know what ‘Offensive Rating’ or ORtg% means.

AI, take it away…

ORtg is an abbreviation for Offensive Rating, which is a basketball statistic that measures the number of points scored or produced per 100 possessions.

Dean Oliver, author of Basketball on Paper, developed the ORtg rating, which has been available in the NBA since the 1977-78 season.  ORtg is a better rating to use than points scored or points allowed because it adjusts for each team’s pace. For example, a team might not allow many points because they play at a slow pace, giving their opponents fewer possessions to score.

If Keatts wanted to put the most efficient offense on the floor, this is what the lineup would look like (taking into account oRtg and level of contribution or ‘possessions used’)

PG: Mike O’Connell (129.2)
SG: Breon Pass (124.8)
SF: Trey Parker (114.9)
PF: Ben Middlebrooks (126.5)
C: Brandon Huntley-Hatfield ( 107.5)

Bench

Marcus Hill (109.4)
Dontrez Styles (106.1)
Jayden Taylor (94)
Dennis Parker (86)

Obviously there is more to take into account than ‘offensive efficiency’ , such as experience, defense and rebounding, but it’s worth noting who on the team is producing on the offensive side of the ball and who isn’t. (Stats from KenPom.com)
