According to Joe Giglio from the OG Podcast and the guys over at StateFansNation, Andy Kennedy, UAB’s head coach, played one year at NC State and was a part of the 1987 ACC Championship team prior to transferring.

Before we go calling this a revenge game for NC State, there are a few reports that say Kennedy actually didn’t implicate Valvano for any wrongdoing in the book. However, he did participate in interviews/quotes for the book that eventually led to Valvano getting fired. Let’s dig in to see what he really said…

First off, Personal Fouls by Peter Golenbock is basically a hit piece of Jim Valvano’s NC State basketball program in the late ’80s. It was the book that ended up getting V fired.

Andy Kennedy was a freshman guard in 1987 and ended up transferring to UAB after that season playing for Valvano.

Andy explained that Valvano wasn’t truthful when recruiting players. He said he told multiple kids…

Here are some quotes…

“You’re the only guard we’re bringing in. You’ll start right away.”

(When Kennedy got to campus, there were three other freshman guards who’d heard the exact same line.)

“Every one of us got promised the moon. Then we showed up and it was musical chairs.”

He also explained a situation where he benched Andy the entire game vs. Maryland, so it would seem NC State was dying for a shooter while recruiting Rodney Monroe.
He said he was told…

“It’s just recruiting, kid. You’ll get your minutes.”

Andy was one of three players who went on record for the book. It is believed that he got $200 for doing the interview since the author, Peter Golenbock, told the Washington “I paid two of my sources $200 each to show up and talk… three-hour interviews.”

So, while Andy didn’t implicate Valvano in any wrongdoing, he was basically added to the book to assassinate his character, which sold the plot that he was running a dirty program.

Me personally? Whether he meant to get him fired or not, I wouldn’t mind a little revenge tonight.
