WOLFERETTI: The ref that tossed Tre Holloman last night was under investigation by the NBA in 2023

Anybody else feel like the refereeing was a little ‘off’ last night?

If you watched last night’s game, then you probably are still a little upset about how the Tre Holloman ejection was handled.

First off, watch the clip.

The UNCG guy appears to bump Copeland, which causes some words to be exchanged. Holloman comes in yelling, trying to stand up for his backcourt buddy, Copeland. But as he does this, he’s lightly pushed in the back, which makes him turn around and eventually decides to love-tap the guy in the face (that wasn’t a slap, but ok.)

Now, look, I think that’s a soft ejection, but I’m fine with it. What I’m not fine with is the fact that UNCG didn’t get a single technical foul here. Not for the initial bump that started things, nor the push in the back (which again, was light, but so was the ‘slap.’)

Will Wade did everything in his power not to overreact and get his 3rd technical foul in 3 games, which I think was the right play. This probably would have been the most warranted one, but still, if you keep getting T’s, you’re fans might cheer, but eventually the media will start running with some bogus narrative that you’re unhinged or out of control. Wade gets this and I think he backed off because of it.

That said, it doesn’t excuse the fact that it was a pretty awful call. Kind of inexplicible if you ask me…

What kind of ref does something like this?

One that was under investigation by the NBA, that’s who.

(shoutout to @RaleighsRed for making this initial connection)

Meet Eric Lewis. He refereed the game last night and was under investigation by the NBA in 2023 for creating burner accounts on Twitter and using them to argue against online critiques of his refereeing. He is now the MEAC’s Coordinator for Men’s Basketball Officials.

Now, there’s nothing illegal about what he did in the NBA, but it is pretty weird.

As the NBA was investigating him, he retired, so the NBA closed that investigation.

The call on Holloman was strange. You thought so, Will Wade thought so and the announcers for ESPN thought so as well. Now couple that with the strange scenario of being investigated by the NBA for burner accounts, and add on the fact that Wade pointed out another potential inconsistency…

“And, you know, our defensive efficiency tonight was great except for the fouling.” said Wade. “I mean, that’s the biggest statistical anomaly you’ll ever see when a team outscores another team 42-8 in the paint. You can go back 10 years and find stat sheets and won’t find a team that outscores somebody 42-8 in the paint.

Let’s call it 30 plus points and gets outshot 41-23 at the free throw line, 18 at the free throw line. So it’s impossible. It’s absolutely impossible.”

Not saying something was up last night with the reffing. Just found all of this a bit interesting.

Ok, that’s all, carry on.
