Check out another great breakdown from Scout Team Sports, profiling NC State frontcourt commit, 6’10 Kyle Evans from UC Irvine.

The video breaks down why he’s an elite rim protector, focusing on his excellent positioning, discipline, timing, and weak-side instincts that keep him out of foul trouble (only about one foul per every two blocks). He’s not a super-explosive leaper like some other bigs, but his high defensive IQ and ability to wall up make him a perfect backline anchor. This fits head coach Justin Gainey’s pressure-heavy guard defense perfectly. Evans erases mistakes and gives the perimeter players confidence to gamble. Something NC State severely lacked last season and spent all season trying gimmicks on defense to try to hide that fact.

Offensively, Evans is a low-usage, efficient finisher who thrives on cuts, rolls, pick-and-roll actions, and dump-offs created by guards. He averaged 12 points per game, shoots well around the rim, has good touch with both hands in the post, and doesn’t demand the ball, making him an ideal complement to NC State’s incoming guards (Edmead/Hammond so far). They’re profiling him more as more than a defensive specialist, projecting him as a strong scheme fit who can contribute meaningfully on both ends without disrupting the offense.

Check out the full video, which is full of great info and statistical nuggets.
